Has anybody enlarged the gas lockers to accommodate a bottle bigger than the Camping Gas 907?

Thanks, Yoda

I know Someren did this on the 315 .
This was the same locker as on the 370.

I was going to enlarge the gas lockers to take a different bottle, but due to the gas suppliers move to a larger collar on the bottle I intended to use it made enlargement impractical. Instead I made mounts to carry two extra 907s in the anchor locker. This has now allowed me to have sufficient gas for extended cruises without worrying about running out. When sailing locally the mounts don’t interfere in the anchor locker when the bottles are removed.

I've just worked out how to upload a photo! The pic below shows the 2 bottles mounted this lets me carry 4 bottles in total and allows me to do extended trips without worrying about running out of gas. When the bottles are removed there is only a small bracket left leaving the locker free for normal use.

On the 385 my anchor locker was used for fenders so I put two spare 907 canisters in the liferaft recess on the stern.  I was still able to get a 4 man Plastimo valise liferaft in there.
Three bottles in total should normally be enough but we almost ran out the year we went to Norway and were unable to find camping gas in either Sweden or Norway.  We just made it back to Copenhagen before running out!  I have two crew who are very keen cooks (lucky me!).

I have just enlarged one gas locker on my 2008 400e.
I removed the black plastic liner and created a floor and back wall with 12mm marine ply which is glassed in .
This locker will fit the original 2kg stainless bottle plus a 3.7kg lpg exchange bottle.

I'm glad you were able to enlarge a compartment properly designed to store gas.  The picture above of the spare bottles stored in the anchor locker frightened me.  I recently took a fresh bottle onboard which self-drained over the side in a matter of days; I never smelt gas but it sure leaked badly.  Had that bottle been stored in the anchor locker and the drain hole been blocked, as had also happened recently, any operation of the anchor windlass might immediately have saved me worrying about the bow roller which I'd damaged earlier.  If I was still around to worry about anything, that is.....

In Australia it is prohibited to have anything else stored in the gas locker because of the risk of sparks or damage. Spare bottles have to be stored in a gap locker of open deck area where leaking gas cannot flow back into the boat.
Because of that I was surprised to see bottles stored in the anchor locker.

It took me quite a while looking at the existing locker area and working out if it would be possible to enlarge safely.
Trimming the two panels to fit the existing shape of the fibreglass structure was very time consuming, crawling in and out of the rear space then trimming a few mm here and there. But in the end I am very happy with the end result. It is fibreglassed on both sides and fully tabbed into the structure as I done want any chance of failures.

I had originally planned to follow a similar route to you to enable me to move away from the dreaded campingaz 907 cylinders, but unfortunately the supplier of the larger cylinder announced they were going to discontinue it. It was for this reason that I fitted the brackets in the anchor locker as it is the only storage area that is sealed from the boat’s interior and a drain at its lowest point. The drain doesn’t block because of plastic mesh in the base of the locker, hosing down the chain and anchor during recovery and ensuring all ropes are contained and secured within the locker. As regards risk from the windlass electrical circuitry, it is double insulated, then sealed with silicon and the cable is also double insulated within a sealed conduit. In short not only is it 100% waterproof but it’s also gas tight, all thought about and checked before fitting the brackets.
Being able to carry 4 full 907 cylinders enabled me to recently complete an 8 week cruise in areas were refills were not available. On my return I had only about 50% remaining in the last cylinder. The first things off the boat on my return were the cylinders in the anchor locker, not out of any safety concerns but to avoid them causing rust stains in the locker.

Hope this explains the situation a bit better.
