I need to drop the rudder on my 415 to inspect some damage and most probably replace it. I’ve removed the steering attachment and autopilot arm. I assume I need to remove the ring circled in the attached photo. Once this is out, will it drop? I removed the black ring at the top of the post but there is a ridge at the too which will not allow it to come off.

yep same issue for me with attachment but if you email the manufacturer you will find their service brilliant - they quickly sent me instructions - fundamentally the boat must be high enough for the “drop “ clearance - ie top of shaft to bottom of hull-and a block of wood and a tap with a hammer is required.the rudder drop is not vertical so if you are out of water and a couple of inches short it should still come out as the instructions indicate.

If you have rudder damage you will need to contact them for related advice.

Local agent said nearly every owner does not follow their maintenance advice of dropping for quick inspection, a quick sand with Emory cloth and if all looks ok Re install - he said that non adherence results in potential shaft replacement due to corrosion issues or bearing damage and replacement - at lewst 10 years before any signs occur- I move the top of my rudder in several directions to check for excess movement during lift outs at his advice
