Hi, 
I plan to replace the standing rigging with a new on this summer. My boat is a Hanse 400e from 2007.

Can this be done without taking down the mast?

Hi Jan

It would be technically possible to replace each shroud in turn but you would lose the perfect opportunity to examine in detail the mast and its fittings.  I replaced my rigging recently and identified a serious issue with the attachment of the spreaders to the mast which potentially could have brought down the mast at sea.  This issue could not have been found with the rig in tension.  I found corrosion in the electrical cables that would have led to failure of the masthead lights and also replaced the sheaves, reducing friction (and in one case chafe) on the halyards.  Finally, I was able to clean and polish the whole mast easily, thus prolonging its working life.

While of course its perfectly OK to leave a mast up over winter, its good practice to take it down and inspect it perhaps every 3-5 years depending on local conditions.  In Norway and in Scotland, mine came down at the end of every season if the boat was to be out of the water over winter.  If your present rigging is not damaged or unsafe I'd suggest leaving it to the end of the season and unstepping the mast.

While your rigger is likely to charge more for doing the work with the mast stepped which will reduce the savings a little bit, I'd argue that the biggest saving is that money spent on preventative checks and maintenance is likely to be much less than money spent on nasty surprises.....

Thanks for the answer. I agree with you and will take down the mast to get the job done. I plan to sail from Norway to Scotland this summer, and got an offer from a rigger in Scotland who thought he could do the job without taking down the mast. I don't think the mast has been down since the boat was new in 2007, so it's about time.

You wouldn't be the first Nordmann to cross over in search of plunder, treasure...or much cheaper prices.  I kept a Rassy in Stavanger but whenever it needed serious work it was well worthwhile to do an 'Eric Anderraa' and make the crossing; the seas were far less scary than the price I was quoted.  As a guide, I paid about £3100 for a full standing rigging replacement a year or so ago, if you're able to fit such work around your cruising plans.

Getting the mast down will only add less than 10% extra of standing rigging replacement + add benefit for the ease of doing it and other inspection.
Get the mast down : easier, safer, more comfortable, better work & better inspection of other things... and somehow cheaper

Hi Jan - my last was done on the UK south coast so likely to be well outside your cruising area.  However, many years ago I was based in the Clyde areas where there was plenty of choice and standards were good; perhaps anyone reading this with up-to-date knowledge there might care to comment?  There's lots of choice in the region.  If by some chance you do get that far south then 'JTR Rigging' at Endeavour Quay, Gosport are truly first-class.
