Hi
For me and depending on the sea state and heel:- Steady wind above 15kts I'd roll in the jib first 25/30%, then if necessary reef #1 in the main. Steady wind above 20kts I'd roll in the jib further 35/40%, then if necessary reef #2 in the main. Tomorrow is forecast upto 25kts NNW Falmouth so I'll start double reefed. |

I always use the ST jib unless racing. I never sail with the self tacker part furled unless it is very windy. ie F8+ although I have not used my current laminated jib in anything above F7 yet & it does seem very powerful compared with my last 3 dacron STs so I may have to re think that one some time.
If it is flat water & up wind the 1st reef at 20kts apparent. If rough then a little earlier 15-17kts & I then tend to bear off a bit. Second reef in flat water 23kts rough water 19kts Down wind add 3-5 kts to those wind speeds plus a bit for any increase in boat speed Really depends on angle of wind, sea state & how I feel as nearly always sailing SH I prefer to be comfortable. I also tend to set the boat up for my Aeries self steering so in some cases i have to reef earlier as it seems to have a mind of its own. It also depends on sail shape. My old baggy main would not flatten very well, whilst my Hyde main can be flattened quite well & backstay hardened right up to reduce a lot of heeling first. I have my rig set to allow quite a bit of bend in the mast & the Cunningham can be applied as well as a bit more halyard etc. I tend not to sail with the main hard in. A lot depends on sailing style as well as boat trim, sail set & sea state Edited by samuel - 31 May 2016 at 08:38 |

Hello
I'm answering this old post I always start reefing the main If I roll the jib first, she's really too nervous. 12kn - 15 kn: playing with the mainsail rail (I have one) 15KN - 1st reef - playing with the rail 20Kn - 2d reef - - playing with the rail 25kn - 2d reef and partly rolled jib - playing with the rail 30kn - 2d reef - no jib - playing with the rail 35kn - 3rd reef - playing with the rail 40kn - Not playing but praying. Never had to pray till now Since I have new sails, I hav to say that she behaves much better |

Not only those who wander are lost
I've learn that the best way to learn about people is to sail with them |

TWS
1st reef at 18-20kn with 140% genoa 1st reef at 20-22kn with 90% jib 2nd reef at 25-30kn with 90% jib I have a rail intalled I try not to use the genoa half-furled because my standard furler doesn't seem to be strong enough for that
