We have now had our 385 for a few months and love the boat. I was thinking about adding a secondary, back-up automatic bilge pump with an alarm. It just seems to me that having a back-up makes sense. Has anyone else done this? Our AC condensate drips into the bilge, so there is always some water that needs to be pumped out when it is hot. I am planning to put it in a spot where it would only activate should the primary pump malfunction, and I would run a separate hose out a new through hull in the stern to keep the systems completely separated.

Andy, generally a second bilge pump is placed a little higher than the primary system so if the primary is unable to handle the amount of water, the second pump can assist.  I would not limit the second pump's deployment to times when the primary failed.  Rather, it should supplement the primary.  Also, when you do add a secondary, consider making the primary the secondary and  installing a significantly larger and more efficient primary.

Hi Andy, our A/C condensate drains into a small sump box with a float switch activated pump and all goes outboard. You need a non return valve as the drain point is higher than the sump box, but this works very well and keep the bilges dry.
All the best
