Hi everyone, I’m considering a Hanse 411 as a potential liveaboard and bluewater cruiser. I really like the design and sailing characteristics, but I do have some concerns about the keel and overall structural integrity. I’ve now looked at two different boats of this model. On one of them, the owner mentioned that the 411 isn’t really designed to take too much weight on the keel when hauled out. From my experience, that usually suggests the construction around the keel might not be as strong as I’d like for serious offshore use. So my questions are: • How robust is the keel structure on the Hanse 411? • Have owners experienced issues with damage when the boat is hauled and placed on stands? • Is it common for stress cracks or fiberglass damage to appear in the area around the keel or interior floor sections if too much load is placed on the keel? • Has anybody else here had this problem? I’d really appreciate hearing from experienced 411 owners about how strong the keel attachment is and whether this is something to worry about. Thanks in advance! |

Regarding 371, which probably is not too different from 411: Vedette stands on its keel every winter, 20 winters so far, with no issues related to this. The support poles keep it from falling down, but do not carry any significant load.
Sailing against Finnish granite it looses though. However, the shipyard fixing the damage complemented Hanses vs. other popular brands (I'll skip the names of the brands...) for their strong build, including laminated instead of glued structures. Whether it is strong enough comes to your requirements and what you compare it to: I believe it is more strongly built - including the keel - than most other yachts in the same category, but definitively it is not a go-anywhere exploration yacht. Instead of the keel, focus on not hitting or placing weight on the rudder.

My 411 had been part of the DaimlerChrysler North Atlantic Challenge race from NY to Hamburg in 2002. She was named ”Tom‘s Kahn“ then and the fleet faced severe weather conditions.
As to my knowledge, the boat had an issue with the keel during the race that had been fixed by Hanse afterwards. It had been rated as an individual failure of a worker. Since I own her, only minor issues that are quite normal on a 23 year old boat. No cracks in the keel area. Andreas
