Peter,

The 505 will be a good size for your first owned yacht. We visited the Hanse yard back in early June and at that stage there was a lot of discussion about the 505 but we weren't shown one. I guess they didn't want us to change boats at that late stage in the sales process. We had the opportunity to see twenty 575's in various stages of construction which was good. There are still things we want to look at in closer detail so we are going to take a quick 3 day trip to Sydney to see the 575 probably in mid Oct. We couldn't get to the Sydney boat show as we were on charter up around Lizard Island over that period.

We did see a 495 at a QLD boat show a few years ago which did not appeal to us but the 505 now has features which would appeal. I am sure your family will love the 505 and maybe you can encourage them to do some longer range cruising. Each year around this time there is a sailing rally which leaves from our marina and spends about 5 weeks up in the Louisiades (Papua New Guinea) which is a really interesting area only about 600nm from Cairns. Well worth a visit for families new to cruising.

We pick our 575 up at the factory in mid June next year and our plan is to take about 10 years to sail her back to Oz.

I am sure a lot of forum members woud like to hear what you have specified on your 505!

Peter,

You have chosen a fairly large option list - no mention of air cond or generator?

We had looked at the in mast furling option in detail and after a lot of input from the forum putting forward cases both pro and cons we decided IMF was not for us mainly because (i) we are going to spend a lot of time cruising to more remote areas and felt the simplier slab reefing setup would be easier to maintain and potentially less problematic and (ii) the use of IMF was not as easy and simple as we had originally thought it would be. Having said this most if not all owners who have IMF were happy with their choice. A lot of the larger vessels we saw at the Hanse yard were fitted with IMF. I notice the 2014 model 575 now lists two options for IMF with the new option being an electric "push button" unit with a fairly large price attached. If you haven't read the forum item about IMF have a look in the 575 posts as it is informative reading. Andy I suggest you have a look at the IMF thread as well.

Andy you must be going to do a lot of cruising even if you only are sailing back to Oz over 12 months. What are you plans for your trip from the yard?

My plan is to Sail the Baltic during 2014 after taking delivery from the yard.
Will winter either in the Baltic or Dartmouth , England. Will then spend a year in the Med during 2015. Then head towards the Panama Canal slowly and across the Pacific before heading up into Asia for a year or 2.

Have no plans to bring the yacht to Australia at this time.

Will have trips back to Australia to my base in Tasmania when ever I need a break.
