Hi,
had this obeservation during our latest club regatta.
We (Hanse 342 and a Hanse 315) participated as usual in the weekly club regatta. This evening was, however, a little different than most evenings. It was blowing into the bay with a rainy 15-18 knots south-easterly wind raising choppy swells of aprox 3 feet. The wind forecast said going to 16-22 knots during the race. In our race theres now a Bavaria (same size) and the skipper is a good friend of mine and a former top-10 class boat skipper. Just after the start the Hanses and the Bavaria tacks fairly equal as the wind shortly dropped to 10 knots and the Hanses tacking with selftacker jibs and the Bavaria with a 120 % genua. At the 1. and 2. mark the Bavaria had an advantage of 2-3 minutes in front But as the windspeed raises the Hanse just accelerated on the down wind leg and passes the Bavaria. On the last upwind leg the wind was 18-22 knots and the choppy swells were about 5-6 feet. It was under those conditions I obeserved that not only did the Hanses continue tacking upwind with full mains and jibs, the Hanses were doing great boatspeed and the Bavaria was left behind. The last leg was 1,2 Nm and the Bavaria reached the finish line 8 minutes after the Hanses. After the race I talked to my Bavaria friend and he said that he envy the Hanses for there "heavy weather" performance vs the Bavaria and that he did have a hard time job controlling the Bavaria in those choppy swells even after he had taken one reef in the main. He is now looking forward to meet the Hanses again under more Bavaria friendly wind and swell conditions (7-12 knots) but again....the Hanses will then meet him with genoas on the furlers instead of selftacking jibs and show him our well polished rudders...... /Steen Edited by Abstinenz - 12 June 2009 at 10:05 |

Interesting, what Bavaria modell was this? I have been racing my 350 against Bav 38 AC and I have a frind with a Bav 36 AC with lead keel. Both of them is hard to beat with the selftacker. The 38 AC is impossible in lightairs, but I have not done so many races against the 38. The 36 is much easier to beat but, not when you come to corretced time after the LYS-regulations

Bjoris,
It's a Bavaria 31 AC.
This week we had flat water and windspeeds of 14-18 knots (20 knots in gusts). We choose to race with our 130% "gold genua" (kevlar) on our 342. In the gusts upwind we were a little over canvased with full main and genua but finished 12 minutes ahead of the Bavaria on the 6,5 nm olympic triangle track. No problems at all vs. the Bavaria. Our upwind speed was 6,1 knots in the gusts and 6,5 in 15 knots of wind, so we should have taken one reef to target an optimum average of 6,4 knots upwind. /Steen

Finaly I got to testsail my new 108% HPC from Gran Seil. Wow... We finished second of seven boats, normaly we would be 4-6... There where huge differnces in tacking angel and speed. Most impressive, we could stay until 20 knots of wind before we had to take a reef, with the selftacker you need to reef at 15-18 knots... There is so much more power when going true waves with this sail. Sadly there where no Bavarias this time... We had a boatspeed of 6,5 to 7,0 konts going upwind in 21-22 knot of steady wind, we then took 1 reef. There where 1/2 metres waves coming right at us so we did not push to hard on the tacking angel, we passed a Melges on the way home, upwind...:) They had a bit better tacking angel but a lot less speed... But let`s admitt, this was fare from ideal conditons for a Melges 24.
I just cant wait until next week ![]() Edited by bjoris - 17 June 2009 at 23:31 |

Hi Bjoris.
It's great to have a better headsail. The Hanse standard selftacker from North is just a 85% jib. We also have a brand new 98 % size kevlar/carbon selvtacker (25m2) with tafetta on both sides from Quantum and it gives a huge difference and less heeling. We use it for cruising purpose and for racing in the upper wind scale. /Steen
