Doing some deep cleaning I was reminded I had this. Has anyone else got a similar crudely cut recess on their boat and if so, any ideas why its there?!?

Its under the sole boards in the aft port cabin. Incidentally, when investigating a leak from a hull valve in the Head a few seasons ago I found that this is where leakages in that area drain to from the fwd outboard corner. Really peculiar.

Any ideas, realistic or humourous, welcome!

Weird! Don't think I've ever lifted the floor board in that cabin.

Exactly the same in my 400 of 2007.
It’s out of sight but nevertheless it looks unfinished.

On my 2010 400 this recess is where the through hull stainless studs come through that hold the external hull anode. Inside bonding wires for the rudder, keel and diesel tank connect to this anode.

My understanding is earlier generation 400's didn't have hull anode my generation does, 415 don't and new 418's do again. Hard to follow Hanse's logic, Jefa are adamant rudder should be isolated not bonded and hull anode 2m away will do nothing to protect the huge mass keel, keels suffer from rust not dissimilar metal issues and need sound paint system to protect them.

Thanks very much, that makes sense; mine is 2007/08 and came without a hull anode. Seems they were going to fit one but kind of forgot.....

I was having to replace the prop and saildrive anodes on about a 4-monthly basis even with a galvanic isolater fitted. A corrosion technician couldn't trace the source of the problem so I retro-fitted a hull anode at the start of 2018 which made all the difference though if I'd thought about this recess it might have been a better place. I really should make more use of my PhD in hindsight.

Many thanks for the replies.
