I'm thinking of buying a 292/300/301 somtime in the future and am interesting in cruising and racing.  Does anyone know the difference in performance between the wing and deep keels?

Also, any idea on costs of sails and who provides a decent set of sails for racing in the UK?

Thanks in advance,

Ben

Ben,

Cutty Stark is a 300.  I race her almost every weekend (3 crew) and have a number of weeks cruising each year. (The wife & Me) I have found her to be ideally suited for the dual life.

Cutty Stark is a deep fin version and I would recommend that keel type. I believe its more efficient and you get a bigger rudder with it which helps create lift on the wind and control off it. I have had occasion to dry out against the wall in Ilfracombe and she does it fine.

Regarding Sails  I dont believe you can beat Steve Goacher of Goacher Sails Bowness on Windermere. Steve is a National Champion of many classes and has been involved in developing 292s 300s 301s sails for racing so knows about the boat and how to cut a set of sails to get the best out of it. He also has a very impressive substantial state of the art loft and is a really nice bloke. He cut me a fantastic Spinnaker and 145% Genoa.

I owned a winged keel version. We sailed some good races and when close sailing we were not the first but mostly second in sailing upwind. Only time we felt that we sailed with a wingedkeel ship was with high seas. The ship will let you know that the wing is keping the movement a bit odd...hope you can imagine what the wing will do when going up and down?!
