Many thanks for everyone's good wishes - keel reattached today Big smile

One further lesson - if you need a specialist part like a propshaft from Yanmar then be prepared to wait a very long time.  Mine had to come from Japan; it was ordered in January but I'm told it won't even be in the UK until the 16th - one day before the launch date and far too close for comfort for me.  Taking Mark's advice about refurbishing the old one I was told it couldn't be done in time, so I've had no choice but to order the old one to be refitted.  Cruising plans have had to be drastically altered this year anyway so I don't think the risk is too great.....unless anyone knows otherwise.....!

New epoxy coating to bottom but no prizes for spotting what's missing:

if you go the prop shaft repair route. Easy to find  find one of the specialists that repair motorcycle fork tubes. They grind out the wear ring then they use a specialist plating firm who hard chrome back above size and then they grind to original size. There are a few out there (I cant recommend one as I havent personaly gone this route yet)  there experience is fixing motor bike forks and the prop shaft job is identical set of skills and plating expertise.
On my Yanmar SD20 I didnt have time last year when I found seawear/leak so made different thickness spacers and bought thinner lip seals to move lip along the shaft away from wear. On this years liftout Theseals all good so left it alone.

The shafts are probably martensitic stainlees PH17-4 which is precipitation hardened, in this mode it has good salt water corrosion properties doesnt suffer the crevis corrosion problems of 316L. I used to specify this on some north sea oil and gas projects subject to sea water immersion.

Thanks, Perry, I certainly wasn't aware of that despite being a biker myself.  When(ever) I get the new one I'll do as you & Mark have suggested and have the old one refurbished.  I'm far from certain what caused such scoring in the first place as we're only guessing that it was immersion in fine mud. Now that 'Leopard's' berth has been properly dredged this shouldn't be an issue but having a spare that can always be sold on if it's not needed seems to make sense.

Funny how often motorcycles & yachts intersect! :) I have one too & yes the fork refurb approach is exactly right.

Iain if you have to live with the old shaft for a season, I can recommend using an expansion pipe & filter mounted off the top extract point on the SD50. Or even add a small expansion tank. Mounted so the top of the pipe/tank is above waterline at all heel angles & you effectively overfill the SD50 but still have oil expansion capabilities. Atmospheric pressure counters seawater intrusion pressure on the seals. Got me through a season with leaky seals. I did just one mid-season in-water oil changeover. Never seemed to actually cause an oil leak to water as the level never dropped.

That's very interesting, thanks Mark.  I recall that the clutch-kit modification does include such a pipe that rises from the top of the SD50 and ends in a vent well above the engine block, but with everything else going on I hadn't properly considered its function; sounds like its exactly as you describe.    When I get onboard next Friday I'll check it out - once we've tidied away the detritus of an 8 month refit!

Just a note to say thanks for the support over the refit saga.  'Leopard' is now back where she belongs; pics are of her sunning herself off Lundy in the Bristol Channel.  The new 105m2 G0 sail has made a huge difference, being useful between about 50-160' apparent.
The only snag was bending that wretched anchor roller in an argument with Milford Haven lock....

Looking good White Leopard!  Code 0 sounds good.  However, I suspect if I suggest buying yet another sail I'll be living on Grey Goose permanently :)

Beautiful setting, Lundy.

We were thinking of overnight couple years ago on the way from Scilly’s to Dublin, but figured too rocky and pulled an overnighter.

Code zero is cool,  but expensive, also wondered how often one would really use it. I must admit I hardly use my gennaker.

Currently cruising your beautiful south coast.
Tomorrow Dartmouth-Helford.
Wanted to go scilly’s again, but not looking forward to the rocky moorings with fresh southwesterly’s.
Seems we planned our vacation couple weeks too late Ermm

Hi Peter - currently stuck in Pwllheli with electrical issues & bad weather before we cross to Ireland, so ‘I feel your pain’.  Suggest for Scillies in strong SW you consider the moorings in New Grimsby, entering from the north.  Old Grimsby is also sheltered in SW winds, though has fewer moorings but you could look for patches of sand to anchor which I wouldn’t do in New Grimsby where they’ve laid extra moorings in the last 2 years. All are well maintained; landing easy on Tresco or Bryher.

New sail is a ‘cruising’ version of a C0 on a roller.  Very light & easy to rig - so gets flown far more than previous gennaker.  Whenever I threatened to fly that my wife threatened divorce but she loves the new one.  Cost was £4500 but it increases the versatility of my sail plan, seriously increases speed up to about 15kts true and means we do less motoring.
