Had my first real problem on High Time over the weekend. The cold water feed to the tail of the shower mixer tap came off while the system was pressurized. Fortunately we were on the boat otherwise 320L of water would have been pumped into the bilge (what bilge?) and the pump would probably have burnt out.
I was enjoying the sunshine in the cockpit and my wife was down below when the fresh water pump started pumping spontaneously. After a few seconds to check that a tap had not accidentally been turned on my wife had the presence of mind to turn off the pump at the switch panel. It took about 5 minutes to determine the cause the problem, including a few more seconds of pumping while we listened for the sound of rushing water, and maybe another 5 minutes to re-attach the pipe and screw the jubilee clip back firmly. It will now probably take another 5 months to remove all the 10L (estimate) of (fresh) water that was pumped into the bottom of the boat. Access to the offending pipes was not too bad - through the inspection hatch in the shower and up under the shower seat. However, the only access to the under (sub) floor (to mop up the water) is through the small holes drilled in the crossbeams - not good. We always turn off the water pump when sailing and when leaving the boat, if only for a few minutes. However, it is left on during the day when we are on board. I do worry about folk who don't turn their seacocks off when they leave the boat. Jubilee clips do occasionally come adrift! Edited by High Time - 01 July 2013 at 11:09 |

Hi Roger,
what is a jubilee clip ? Is this a stainless steel hose clamp, which you tighten by means of a screw? I always have them as twins on a hose.

Yes. It's usual to have 2 jubilee clips on seacock tails but unusual to have 2 clips on fresh water pipes. I suspect, if you check your fresh water system, that there will only be single clips on pipe connectors. The problem with the shower tail connector was that it was tapered, although it did have ridges on to help hold the smooth bored pipe to which it was connected. I guess the jubilee clip was not sufficiently tight and hence it let go when the pipe became warmer and more flexible than previously. This weekend we had strong sunshine that was directly onto the hull where the pipe was situated.

Had the same problem on our 445 and spilt 400 liters into the bilge.
Since that our fresh water pump is only on when we use water. It is a pitty that such little problems occur and give a lot of unconvinience. It is completly unneccessary when proper work would be done. If it would have been tighten and secured in the first place it would not had come off. Such things take a bit away the trust into the boat as it is always on your mind, what is next? HanaFe |

I fully agree, you just need a little battery powered tool with a torque limiter and you are sure that it never comes off, provided the "jubilee's" ( I learned something new :) ) are properly installed.

That is the threat concerning the loose jubilee.
I thought it is easier to find if I just post a reply in this threat. The water tank leaking threat was another threat. The tank really had to be replaced as it was broken. Cheers HanaFe |
