AFter the pleasure of the pre-delivery checkout... what a buzz!
we have some small/annoying faults we wonder if anyone has come across before..

When tacking, the mainsail is fouled by the backstay.. Two of the batten cups are held quite firmly by the stay, and eventually there's going to be a repair needed.

We can't see an obvious way of keeping the stay clear, even tried remounting the deck blocks to one side or the other but it doesn't give enough clearance.

Having the backstay loose enough to be shaken around the batten cups doesn't feel like a proper solution either.

Has anyone seen this problem before?

If you had the standard sails delivered it is more than likely that there is an error in the way they were cut. Mine had to be sent back to Northsails as they were a terrible shape. The main had 30cm cut from its length, before it was useable.

Ouch..!!

So that begs the question what the spec of the standard mainsail is.
We've just spent the day having fun with the gennakerr and stuffer. Nice piece of sail :-) Reaches well.. gybes well.. needs some extra cleats blocks and lines... but when the mainsail really got hooked up on the backstay during a gybe we completely lost our composure and got everything tangled :-)) A lot of fun to co-ordinate all the sheets :-)
We'll get a chance on Tuesday to measure the main and prob compare with other owners to see what exactly we have.

Thanks for your Reply Nick.

Peter,

Suggest that you install a backstay lifter. Have a look at the one from Selden. Should take care of your problem.

Thanks for the suggestion...

The Selden website showed some flexible rods which look a bit too light for this rig.
To make this work it would need a larger castle on the mast top. The 355 rig isn't fractional enuf to promote mast bend, and during gybing with a gennaker I wouldn't want a loose backstay.

If the sail is deliberately larger than the triangle, we may have to look at redesigning the batten caps to remove the inside square edges and place a ramp on the inside to allow a tight stay to run off..

I'll check sail sizes first, then put the backstay lifter in 3rd place :-)
Thanks for the info. :-)

Hi Peter

I had new sails made by North Sails with the same problem, (see picture). Apparently they go for maximum sail area according to racing rules. They re-cut the sail to clear the backstay free of charge. Excellent service. I will find out next if they removed enough roach.

Champion !

We wait with baited breath on how successful the recut is.
Which branch of North Sails will do the work?

Hi Peter

The sail set better now and the tell tails fly cleanly. However the top battern still touches the backstay as it goes across 2cm too long but much better.

It was North Sails on Bodensee Germany that did the fix

Good news that there's an improvement :-)
Would you mind sending me the original photo of your mast top pls. The web photo has been cut in resolution and I'd like to zoom it up and see where the backstay is attached and if there's room to mount it further aft..
