ubulukutu has entered the marmaris international race week, we haven't raced for a while and have no regular crew so we are entering for the fun and experience. Time will tell how we get on in a couple of weeks time

![]() ![]() Having said its just for fun, we spent the morning taking off some of the cruising stuff we have accumulated over the last three years. Dive gear, 50KG of books (novels, tour guides, pilot books) wind generator, cooler, BBQ and fuel, engine spare spares (we kept one set) fishing rod, electric pump for the dingy, and we left off the self tacker as we will race with the 105, and the spare 20 litres of diesel. Luckily our marina has a 10 metre by 10 storage space for hire, so its all in there now. We've kept enough stuff on for the 2 week cruise to Marmaris and back again after the race, so we are not quite down to race weight, but better than we were.

Mark & Catherine, You are on the right track. For distance races we also remove the V-Berth and Aft Cabin cushions (in part to prevent their destruction), the "lids" on the sinks and stove top, the bimini (including frame) and every excess item we can do without. I'm not sure it does a whole lot of good but it makes the crew feel "fast." One of the boats we race against, a Sydney 41, has removed all stateroom and cabinet doors, its table and everything that wasn't bonded to the hull. They claim to have removed 2000 lbs!

Why "toothbrushes", one with shortened handle is enough

Hi Silversailor,
Nice idea but there are two problems with this. ! - we ticked the boxes in the irc application to say that we hadn't removed the cushions or doors, and the one that said we were in full cruising mode, so I expect that we would fail scrutineering if we did so. 2 - The First Mate (wife) is racing, she is the one that puts the kettle on as soon as we round the top mark so she can make tea whilst the boat is relatively flat, she's not going to be happy if there is nowhere to sleep on the cruise there and back! |

Sounds like a wonderful place to race.
I recall a friend who came on board as a very experienced racer to join our crew for RTI. After I removed all surplus weight he went through finding stuff I never dreamt of, such as Admiralty charts for the Channel Islands and a cheese grater. We won a trophy!

the pilot books are all off, but the cheese grater is just one of those little flat ones, and i might have to grate the Parmesan for the pasta!
