Not sure if anyone has seen this before, but I'm working the first
problem I've had with our Miele Washer/Dryer (WT2780) in 7 seasons.
Its running and then just shuts down, with the display going dark.
After a period of time, it pops back up and finishes what it was
doing. Ordinarily, I would think its a
heat/temp sensor tripping and then once it cools down it starts up
again. The Miele service line tells me there probably isn't one in my
unit, however. It still has power. The breaker has not popped It
is not a drain filter clog. I have cleaned the filter and made sure
of the flow. Its exiting to the grey water tank and thus the boat just
fine. I've cleaned the seals and checked the input water line. The flow seems to be OK. What
has me baffed is the panel going dark. Its not possible to see an
error code even if one was being raised due to this. I am being told
to check pins 2 and 3 on the ribbon cable to see if they are getting
13V DC. If so, the panel should be lit. When the unit comes back
on, the display seems fine. Controls and lighted panel work OK. Anyone seen this before? I've got a tech coming in a day or so, but just in case one of you has.... I've
attached the PDF for the unit wiring (line diagram). The ribbon cable
enters with EW181. Its a US unit. Installed at Bristol Marine in
RI. 110V, running off tank / pump water and plumbed to grey water
tank. One of the reasons I like it is that it simply got carried on
to the boat and installed. No cutting up of the interior. No putting
pieces of it in because it wouldn't fit. If I had to replace it, it
would be pretty easy. Like I said... its been a champ for over 7 seasons so far. This is the first time its given us trouble. ![]() Edited by Black Diamond - 09 October 2025 at 21:01 |

Hey Rick,
We had an issue with our Miele W/D which was that it would not turn on at all. A Miele tech came down and he could look at the error codes. It ended up there is a sensor sitting in a small depression in the base plate of the machine and if there is any water in this depression the machine will not turn on. The tech had to remove the rubber skirt around the outside of the drum and then push the drum aside to be able to see the sensor/depression and sure enough it had a small amount of water in it. Not sure where the water came from - we never found out and it didn't happen again. The tech showed me how to remove and replace the skirt in case we had the problem again. Eventually the original Miele unit failed (warped drum) and we replaced it with an 8kg Miele washer only unit. It was about 10 years old when it failed. The tech said because the drum is constantly moving with the motion of the boat they will not last as long as it a home situation. Still it had a lot of use before in failed.

So it turns out the repair (heating element) will cost more than a new unit. Looks like an over-the-winter replacement project. If anyone has had good luck with a particular brand or model, please post here. Right now looking at the LG as it seems Miele doesn't make the same unit anymore.

Rick,
Our first Miele W/D met with the same fate - repairable but not economical. Fortunately we found a replacement Miele washer only with an 8kg capacity which was supposed to be the same size as the original. We hadn't used the dryer feature on the old unit for a long time because it took too log and required the generator or shore power on to do so. In the tropics the best dryer is the sun .Unfortunately the new Miele was slightly bigger than the old unit and need to be deconstructed to get it in through the hatch. It only just fitted in the cabinet. The timber blocks the builder had fitted to stop the old unity moving into the cabinet had to be moved and there was a strange fitting connecting the fresh water to the machine but after visiting three chandlers twice I found it was an air fitting and was able to get a correct match. Very happy with the new larger capacity machine. The old machine weighed 110kg which was a challenge to get out the hatch but ended up using the boom and a large plank to slide it in the cockpit and then the boom again to lift it onto the dock. The new unit was only 80kg.
