Hi,
MMBW Nicole is out of the water for winter maintenance. Here are some pictures: The new anchor folding arm bracket. It has longer pin cannot jump out anymore, and we will add a slider to hold the arm to the pin as additional security. ![]() The bow thruster. One impeller was changed since it was loose on the shaft. Probably destroyed after catching a rope while mooring. The impeller was ridiculously expensive (80 euros), and we are looking for other source of buying them (not originals will do), since we expect to destroy or loose one or two per season. ![]() The Volvo shaft seal. Nothing done here. Any comments? ![]() The Gori. Some work was needed to clean inside. Now works perfectly. I have to keep the blades open, else they fold under their own weight. ![]() ![]() ![]() The rudder. Already beginning to disintegrate. Next winter I will rebuild it, else I feel it will get destroyed. ![]() A white ring on top of the rudder: ![]() General view of the boat: ![]() |

Thanks for the fotos.
Not nice the problem with the rudder. Lokks like rust, but there is no steel in it as i know. Wondering why it looks like this.
But why do you want to rebuild it yourself? What is about warranty?

Hi Panos,
great photos. What does "MMBW" mean? Or is it not for public ears?
Did you had a crash with the rudder. In the area of the rust it looks like. Edited by Stella*Nova - 25 March 2009 at 16:00 |

Hi,
1)MMBW=MyMostBeautifulWife 2)Rudder : We never hit it and it is not hit, it just looks so in the picture. What is wrong is: a slot between the two halves and water coming out. We tried to open the slot up to seal it with epoxy, but the water inside the foam prevented the epoxy to stick, so we sealed it with silicone which is not water sensitive. 3)Rudder #2: Next year we want to open up a bigger hole (about 300 mm long and 100mm wide) , remove and replace the damaged foam inside and cover the area with new epoxy resin. Total cost of material will be less than 100 euros. Labour I do not pay since I will do it with the help with the permanent crew of the boat. If I decide to make a claim I will have to call a surveyor who will charge at least 250 euros just for looking to the rudder, and who knows when( and if) I will take this money back from Hanse. |

Panos - thats real love, great!
Regarding the rudder, the only thing I am shure is, that Frost is not the reason for the rudder damage. Hopefully it is not a general Problem with the 630-rudders. I would suggest to involve Hanse and to ask for a new rudder. It is absolute not acceptable that you, the customer has to repair it. Would you do it at a car?
When the boat is 15 years old it should be OK to repair, but not at a brandnew boat.

I agree. By making a warranty claim you will be helping others in the same situation. I don't know how many times I've had the comment "nobody else has complained" trown at my face.

Hi,
This I already did, but is not an official claim. Also I think that they will find the cheapest possible way to solve the problem (which could be : do nothing). We will see. |

If they would do nothing this would be a shame. May be your dealer will do so. But if i were you, i would also contact the yard in Greifswald, as you got your boat delivered in Greifswald, they are also responsible for it. Water in the rudder can be a safety issue.
Just a reminder. I do not know why this happened to a 371 some time ago, but its also a rudder from a hanse. Foto is from this thread:

In 2004 the rudder on my 2002 Hanse 371-092 showed signs of delamination, with a bulge and ripple in one side, and pressing on it you could definitely tell there was a void. When removed and dropped a short distance to the ground it split open. There was a lot of water inside.
It was eventually replaced under warranty. Today we hauled the boat out for annual bottom painting and I did a careful inspection of the rudder. I'm pleased to say that it is in fine shape, no sign of delamination. We paint the bottom with black International Micron 33, and use trilux on the saildrive and upper part of rudder and hull near the rudder post. There was no growth, only a little slime on either paint. Edited by gshannon - 05 April 2009 at 18:18 |
