Panos, I think you can get a "x-ray" of your rudder. This will show the ammount of water etc. in the core. This should also be sufficient documentation for Hanse. Please let ud know how it went.

Hi,
Currently there is no water inside. We measured by a capacitive probe used to detect moisture. But we plan to correct the rudder before it breaks down as a preventive improvement. I do not think that Hanse wants to participate in improvement cost. To get money from Hnase I will have to wait until the rudder breaks down.

With the opportunity I would like to explain that my approach to boats is closer to a house (where you must improve it after you buy) than to a car where you keep it in its as sold condition until you sell it a few years later.

The above link details the procedure used in the Foss rudder factory in US. It is the same as Hanses EXCEPT they glass tape over the leading edge and trailing edge after assembly, then fair it in.

This is very important, particularly the leading edge as the water pressure there is very high when running fast and the slightest crack could quickly spread and tear off the skins.

I don't see that glass taping stage in Jefa's site. If they do it I would like to hear about it.

Fortunately this is fairly easy to do on an existing rudder, it is not even necessary to remove it.  On a 630 I would use Biax and epoxy resin, and run it 200 mm or so on each side. The leading edge would be most important, and the easiest to fair.  Of course the existing skin must be sanded well to remove all paint and gel coat.

By the way, what looks like rust could be a stain from the foam or epoxy, I have seen it before but not sure what causes it.

Panos, I approve of your approach, about treating your boat like your house, rather than a car.  Also I think she looks fantastic, both in and out of the water. Good luck in your racing this year.

Hi Panos,

I`am Thomas, the owner of HANSE 630/006 TAIMA and just got registered at myHANSE. I keep my boat in the caribbean next to Caracas/Venezuela, we did the ARC in 2007, leaving port 5 days late due to the Volvo. Looking at the pictures of your boat on shore I would have a few comments:

a) shaft seal: I have changed the Volvo shaft seal very early and before crossing the atlantic to the PSS Shaftseal, which is the same system I had used on all my other boats. This just works perfectly and does not allow a drop inside. With the Volvo seal we had headaches since day 1 probabkly also due to some vibration created by the GORI.

b) Gori Propeller:  for both boats down here (there is GANDUL a Hanse 630/11  on Margarita Island) the situation with the Volvo shaft system including the shaft rubber bearing and finally the Gori, has not been satisfactory as we have had vibrations at about 2000 rpm in normal gear. We have tried many options and finally got the yard to send us down MAXPROP Propellers. On Gandul this one was installed while we kept the same Gori on TAima. Bottomline now is that gthe Maxprop runs much smoother with no vibrations and the bearings do not wear off, so I plan to change the propeller also the next time my boat gets out of the water.

Downside is that the fuel consumption went up by 20% which does not really bother us as we get the fuel here for like 2 EUR Cents a liter.

Feathering props just runs much smoother than folding props. So the action taken from TAIMA to avoid the sealing from letting water in seems to be based on good experience which I can recognize from other boats.

I and agree about the pics. It's good looking yacht.

Hi Thomas,

Welcome to the forum.
I have been to Venezuela twice (Margarita island) and liked very much. We intend to come again! I remember in a gas station  paying more for a can of Cola than filling the tank!
Referring to the propeller we are happy with the Gori since we mostly sail and only use the engine when no wind. In this case we have some slight vibrations that are felt on the deck but not at the shaft bearing. I guess the seal is transmitting the vibrations to the hull, leaving the shaft inside vibration free. We have a special shaft coupling/bearing between the engine and the seal.

Hi Panos,

yes that is right the cheap gas down here due to cheap official populism is much more of a problem than a blessing to us all down here. Have you ben to Margarita sailing or by plane? Its not such a good place to come by boat as there is only one little marina and a few not very well protected bays. Our "playground" is the archipielago of Los Roques which is only 72 miles away from our marina in Puerto Azul, next to Caracas.  This is a really fantastic place with more than 45 paradiasic islands just like in the brochure, and it is safe unspoiled and normally only few yachts out there . And with the wind down here always coming from the east (15-20 Kt) you get there in less than 8 hours.
