Hi,
I will be soon a 430e owner. The boat is a 2008, with 3 cabins. It has very few upgrades. No bow truster, no FV, no electric winch. A fixed blades propeller, a self tacking jib (to be replaced), no Webasto and no watermaker. No Inverter. Mainsail is ok as well as engine, rudder and electronics (relatively new). It has teak in fairly good conditions (it needs some repairs and maintenance) Now the big question. Assuming I want to invest some money into some upgrades what are the main 3 I should consider?

I would chime in by saying it all depends how do you plan to use the boat: long passages - watermaker and inverter, sitting in hot marinas - air conditioner, docking in windy areas - thrusters, short handed sailing - el.winches. And so on.

To respond to your question. I Will use it mainly in the Tyrrhenian Sea. I love anchoring. I will mainly drive it alone or with a reduced crew. My (totally personal) list would be:
1 FV panels + Inverter 2 New Propeller (variable pitch or automatic pitch as Max Pro - Max Bianchi just released) 3 one of: watermaker, el. winch (at least 1), jet thruster I would like some advise on any aspect i missed, mainly from 430 owners that should change this list adding other priorities |

Pay attention that jet thrusters are super power hungry, their pumps making merely 50 kg of thrust need about 6kW of power and 70kg thrust needs already 11kW. Its a lot power, you will need 48V dedicated battery bank for such setup. Conventional tunnel/retractable thrusters will give you 100 kg of thrust with ~6kW motor.

Where to begin….
I bought my 430e in Spring’22 and the list of items to acquire seems endless. I’d definitely upgrade your DC system with enhanced charging systems to accommodate a large LFP bank. I had the pleasure of crewing on a delivery from Turkey to Athens and the Mediterranean moorings caused some “sphincter puckering” moments so a thruster makes sense. I’m contemplating a water maker for my coastal cruising in Washington State so that upgrade makes sense for the areas you’re going to be sailing in. While those are probably my top three, I’d suggest (pending condition of the boat) - running rigging - standing rigging - upgrade the blocks - sails - I put on a 104% jib as the self tracker was easy to use but had poor performance - electronics - portable freezer - the ice box compartment is useless 💰💰💰…. Almost forgot - the 16 kg Delta anchor is under sized - I’d suggest a 25 kg Vulcan |

Thank you.
DC Charger is a Pro Charger D by Sterling (12V/50A). Any suggestion for an upgrade? Running Rigging is ok Standing rigging isplanned for next year Blocks upgrade is a good point... Mast ones are in fair condition (maybe 2 or thre have to be replaced). Any suggestions on brand and model? sails: I guess i will invest on a rollable Code 0 sail, next year. Now ?I am replacing the self tacking jib electronics is B&G and quite new: AIS transponder and Radar are missing, anyway. Suggestions? portable freezer: I don't use use ice, Evaluating an espresso machine (italians...) |

Charger - I replaced it with a 3000 W Victron Multiplus that charges the 2 - 460 Ahr LFP batteries that replaced the 4 house and 1 winch/windlass batteries. I also upgraded my alternator to a Balmar XT170 that is controlled by an Arco Zeus regulator. I use the alternator to directly charge the house bank and have a Victron Orion DC-DC charger to keep my small AGM house battery topped up.
Blocks - I went with Harken. The original Lewmar ones were cracking and in one instance, the main sheet jumped the sheave and shredded the sheet. That was a spendy one! Suggest you replace them all. AIS & Radar - I replaced all my electronics and went with B&G to keep it "plug and pray"... Freezer - I don't use if for ice, rather for frozen foods like meat, fish etc. By chance I happened upon a garage sale and bought a small ice maker for $25 that does a great job when I'm at anchor. Let's see if I understood. You replaced 5 batteries (4 house and 1 windlass) with 2 LFP batteries that power both house and windlass.
Then you have a third small AGM battery charged by a DC-DC charger (the victron orion) that, i suppose, is powered by the alternator. Is that the ENGINE battery? or Is another house battery? I guess you changed the charger and the alternator to be able to charge LFP batteries (the latter one to avoid overtemperature, i guess). Can you provide a pucture or a scheme of your power set-up? I was too lazy to do a schematic - sorry. But generally you have the concept except that the Orion draws power from the house bank to charge the start battery. And the alternator charges the house. That’s controversial but I have faith in the Arco Zeus to properly charge the hose bank. Note that I installed the start battery in the small compartment in front of the engine and under the companionway stairs.
I don’t even think about power anymore - there’s lots. In the winter, I can anchor out, turn on the electric blanket and the Admiral is happy!
My brain tends to think better than my ability to explain it so let me know if the above makes sense. |
