Hi there,

We ordered a new Hanse 315 last month. It will be delivered in the March 2007. We are really looking forward to next year sailing season as you can imagine.

Just some questions about extra sails. We are considering a 140% Genoa and a Genaker:

To my surprise the genoa is not really bringing much extra speed, at least not according to the polair diagrams of the 370 in this forum. What is your experience?

For the genaker we have to choose an Momentum of 74 m2 or a tailor made according to Hanse specs being about 62 m2. My sailmaker told me the difference is because the mast of the Hanse 315 is relatively forward on the boat. But he also told me the Momentum could also be OK. Any opinion about this? I fear the Momentum sail will get into the shadow of the main quicker.

Hi,
You shall be aware of that the Momentum gennaker is not an optimum designend gennaker. It's OK for cruising but far from optimal in size. A custom made gennaker/assym. spinnaker should be much bigger (say +15 to 20%) as the mid girth can be bigger for better running ability.

Zephyrus,

Nice boat and site! In this forum I started a thread about the genoa size. I'm considering of buying a 125%genoa (28sqm), because I think that the genoa Hanse offers (32sqm) is a abit to big: I guess that 4 sqm more does not bring more speed, and let the boat more easily go to one ear. I have a good price (1100,-€) for this sail, made by East sails http://www.sailseast.com/ It has a Dutch dealer. If you want the address, please let me know.

Have a look at my site http://www.uisge-beatha.eu to some experiences on the genaker.

Good luck,
Gregor

I think the Momentum is overpriced
I note Crusader are cheaper & probably as godd & Hyde are offering even better deals this month
Re the Genoa
I have a Goacher ( Based in Windemere next to Hanse dealership)genoa of 140% with very high clew
Although I had serious issues with Goacher over another matter I have to say the genoa is really good on & off the wind
However I do not need it for windward work unless I am racing or it is light wind. as the self tacker gives fast tacks & points slightly higher
I have a self tacking barber hauler system for the self tacker for just off the wind but really the self tacker is pretty useless for reaching etc
If you have a cruising chute that is cut fine enough to point up a bit you can forget the genoa altogether

I have a UK matrix genaker with 67m2 and it works fine from 60 to 120 degrees apparent wind. But now I regret not having chosen a smaller spinnaker.

Best regards

Thanks for all your advise. I am still a bit puzzled though. It seems that this is a personal thing with a lot of room for interpretation. My doubts about the Momentum Genaker are confirmed. What about the Genoa is it really bringing so little extra speed as the polair diagram is indicating

Speedy, why do you regret the Genaker?

As I have said, the genaker works fine with the 312 and it is very nice with a small crew. However I use to participate in club races and for that I think that a genaker penalize in speed and in the rating.

Best regards
