My autopilot has worked fine from new, but this year it startet to suddenly disengage with
“no autopilot computer” message on the AP24 and/or the Vulcan 7 display. It seems quite random when it happens. I suspect the fault to be: loose connection , bad AC10/12 / or network problem. Last year I changed the wind transducer to a B&G 608. This has been working at will and seldom at my will. I have found this to be a common problem. Not sure if this makes network problem. Anyone have an idea?

Hi
When I had a defect wind vane it took down the whole nmea/simnet-network. Currently my windvane stops working after a lot of rain. I have a reserve at home. I have never had the AC12 loose connection to the network. So i would try to unplug the connector in the aft storage and move it to another place in the simnet joiner. Think it must be corrosion at the connectors.

Keep a spare Simnet terminator plug handy to plug into the Simnet network in place of the wind transducer cable. If you lose the wind transducer it can impact the whole network as it’s got the ‘far end’ terminator built in (although it can be a bit random in its effects).

Hi again
It appears that if I turn on and off the simnet/instruments several times, the wind transducer will start working. First I believed it to only have intermittent problems after a rainy day, but is not the case anymore. I have a reserve wind transducer I will use for the next season. This will be the 3rd windtransducer in 7 years... |

Curious about this as well.
It happened to me several times last year and none this year. It's a mystery...

I have changed the wind transducer back to the old warn out IS20. The autopilot is now working 100%.
What is wrong with my new B&G 608? Does it not have a built in terminator? |

The 5/608s have a design issue: extending the NMEA2k all the way to the mast top.
I replaced my 508 which had lost its calibration memory by a 608, which after a year started requiring multiple starts before agreeing to wake up (sounds familiar?).
I then replaced the sleepy 608 by the brand new WS310, which terminates NMES2k below the mast, and uses proprietary RS232 (?) between base and mast top. After a year the new WS310 mast head unit decided to start making its own numbers, especially on warm sunny days: I have seen apparent wind speeds exceeding twice the speed of sound, and more usually no numbers at all. Now this is being replaced by warranty. This will be my sixth* Simrad/B&G wind instrument in 20 years, of which I have paid for wife*. One got taken by lightning, one stopped working when the gust wind speed reached 36 m/s, but the others got sick or died peacefully. I now keep a spare unit in the boat, and have a bosuns chair and high torque drill with winch adapter for the next episode. *) edit: numbers corrected, one less (apologies for the rant) Edited by PekkaL - 16 August 2025 at 18:27 |

Haha. This season I have alreaady been two times in the mast top because of the wind vane. Both times it has been an issue with the connector or that the cable is jammed to hard because it has to hold it's own weight for 18 meters. Strangely it survived a lighting within 500 meters that fried our AIS transponder. Our Vhf cable is also toast.
