Hi,
Since we got our H418 in 2018 we’ve always found the Jabsco pump very loud. Today after switching from one tank to another it suddenly became even louder (didn’t expect that was even possible). Anyone experienced in this, and how to fix it? We have a Jabsco Par Max 2.9 pump, there is no pressure vessel installed in the system and our pressure valve on the calorifier is not dripping (yet). |

Funny you should say that Henk, because I had exactly the same happen last weekend after switching tanks?! I didn’t have time to look into it yet.

it is also a problem on our 350, we use the same pump. I believe it is a problem of the vibrations being transmitted through to the structure of the boat. I have done two things; put the pump on rubber mountings (like tiny engine mountings) this did improve it a bit but I must say was disappointing for the effort involved. The other was to trace the pipework and make sure it was kept away from contact with surfaces where possible, whilst not curing the problem it made a noticeable difference. One easy way to do it is to use short lengths of the foam pipe insulation over the pipe wherever it was coming into contact with a surface.
I am not sure why it should be worse when you switch tanks unless you have an airlock somewhere or some sort of restriction such as a partly closed valve or dirty filter which is making the pump work harder. Bob

Has anyone tried the Whale pump to replace the Jabsco? They claim to be quieter, but I haven't wanted to spend $150 to find that it is just as noisy. BTW I fitted a Jabsco accumulator and the noise reduction was disappointingly marginal.

Henk,
When swapping over tanks you probably have air in the system which causes the extra noises. The Jabasco pump can run dry so won't cause a problem. Also may want to check the strainer in front of the pump is clear. Clear plastic lid lifts off strainer with mesh attached so can check all is ok but can be a bit tight. We also purchased a spare pump as have trips a long way from home so just in case. The spare Jabasco pump also comes with the strainer as part of the kit. Good Sailing, Jon.

On my 370 the fresh water pump is a Jabsco and incredibly noisy. Nothing I've done will quieten it down. The shower drain is the same model Jabsco and incredibly quiet. Work that out if you can! I also have a self fitted Jabsco salt water washdown pump that is so quiet that I can barely hear it running... Seems like this is a "feature" of the Hanses!

since the noise increased after switching tanks, I indeed expected an air bubble to cause is. I topped both tanks off while running the pump to force any air out. It improved but not that much.
We’ve done some searching and found it’s most noisy when using kitchen tap. When using cockpit shower, sink tap or shower in bathroom it’s much less. My guess: badly resonating water lines-hose hitting the frames/stringers thus causing this noise. A good winter job is cut out for me: - change pump mounting to much more flexible setup - follow all waterlines/hoses and apply isolation around them, especially when passing thru holes in stringer/frames. - add an accumulator to absorb water expansion in calorifier. In short: improve the water system ;-) Thanks for your suggestions/replies! |

Just an accidental update to the water pump on my 370. I found I had a low pressure leak leading to lots of water in the bilge (not enough to trip the automatic float valve). Yesterday I tracked this down to the Jabsco inlet which is a push fit with a sliding clamp. On close inspection you could see where it was weeping. The O ring was in good order but could not be making a totally positive connection with the housing. I cleaned it all up and refitted it using a smear of plumber's silicone. No leaks and a quiet pump! Clearly for years it had been drawing in a dribble of air and only when the water leak became noticeable did I find it!
