Try under the floor in one of the aft cabins / lazarette.

At the end of your aft cabin there is a removable "door" with a lock. Remove this wooden plate, and stick your head into the space behind the cabin. This is the place to find diesel heaters, radar controllers and autopilot computers. Normally they are mounted on the wooden wall beside the hole. If you crawl into the space (not easy, but possible), you can see the cables coming from the autopilot display in the cockpit.
As you will discover, there is a lot of space back there. In my boat there are stowed empty watercanisters, empty dieseljugs, extra lifevests, a tarpaulin and a primitive washing machine. The space is divided by the rudder post, and there is another door at the starboard side.
But - hold your horses..........
I just wonder if I may have answered a little hastily.. is the RC42 the compass unit? And not the AP computer?
If so, there are a few posts to be found by "advanced search". As I recall, the most common place to find the compass is in the aft locker, but in my boat it is placed under the sink in the galley.
OK - just checked it...... the computer is AC42 and the compass is RC42 Smile

Thanx Capatain,
The steer computer is indeed in the storage in the aft cabine, next to the main switch for the 230vac.
And on almost all  the 400 thats the same, but the rc compass unit isn't....

Did you check under the port cabin mattress? That’s where mine is on a 458.

On my 400e with asymmetric berth in forward cabin, it is in the Port side wardrobe in the clothes hanging section attached to the inside of the forward facing panel. You have to open the right-hand wardrobe door and squat down and look up to see it!

Just an idea: In my raymarine setup, the compass cable is clearly marked (compass) where it is connected in the computer unit. Try to follow the cable as long as possible from the computer, and look under the bunk in the aft cabin if the cable reappears there. There are posts to be found in myhanse "advanced search>any date", where many 400 owners have testified, that the most common place to mount the compass is in the aft wardrobe/locker.

My compass was also in that same place Mark. Also my 400 has non-symmetric cabin berth.

When upgrading/replacing the electronic systems I fitted a Precision 9 compass on centreline, underneath the forward bunk, on the rear support wall.  It is far enough away from the mast and keel, and close to waterline, which makes it quite stable.

The original Autopilot Computer was behind the main switch panel, but I installed anew  NAC-3 unit in the after area  on the bulkhead, next the the 230V AC Circuit breaker.  This makes wiring to the Autopilot drive unit much shorter and simpler.
