Peter,
I'm pretty sure I was informed of the supplier, but if I have miss-understood then I hold my hand up to that. Nobody this day and age wants to incorrectly cause an issue to an otherwise perfectly good product and make them suffer unduly. May be a representative from them can either explain or confirm that they have advised manufacturers to use their product as an alternative. You will have seen my photographs of the temporary repair made at 0130 whilst in the Irish Sea. Fortunately the conditions were mild and we tacked to put the port hole away from the weather but already had tonnes of water within the bilge. Like Panos last year I've had to replace the batteries and the shore power battery charger and am still chasing electronic bugs, which I contribute to the soaking the wiring had. Our hull windows have all been replaced by the local dealer in the Hamble with bolted in units and they haven't caused a problem yet. The deck windows were replaced too, but cutting the small port holes has caused crazing and like a windscreen of a car, each thump increases the length of each crack. I hope this clears up your concern. Keep an eye on the blogspot for future updates

Hi All,
Unfortunately we joined the club!! We nearly lost the port porthole when at sea 200 milles from New Zealand. Hopefully it was daylight and we were having a gentle 12-14knt breeze when tacking on starboard. The water splashed inside and "killed" the central unit of the autopilot which is fitted on the electrical panel. We managed to repair and finished our journey with the help of our second autopilot!! Inspection of the other starboard window shows the bonding of these to be in similar poor condition and vulnerable to similar failure. Thanks to the help of Firros Yacht who is currently working on the matter. Alain ![]() |

Alain,
I'd like to say welcome, but you know what I mean. Oddly we have a problem with our Raymarine Auto pilot too, which I haven't worked out which component is at fault. Probably the most expensive to replace !

Hi,
I am glad you managed to rig a temporary cover and save the boat. This is a link to a video we took showing the tremendous amount of water passing outside of these hull windows.Scary. The sound is the carbon mast vibration at 12+knots boat speed. And this is the (failed) test which anyone should do OFTEN to verify the windows condition. Everybody should have spare jury rig windows like the one in UHAMBO at least one for every size. This is my last boat that has hull windows. Finally I succeeded to embed to YouTube links after ten trials. Edited by panos - 15 January 2014 at 16:18 |

If you think that the problems of leaking hull portholes are solved just by replace then by the new Lewmar's. Forget it !!!! These portholes are original fitted by delivery of our 545 in 2010. ![]() |

Dear Hanse,
You have the opportunity to discuss these issues with us, so come on, be proud of what you do and let us know your side of the argument. It is not in our interests as owners to drag you in to a legal battle and take you under. We, the dedicated suppliers of finance to your company, wish to see you through the tough times but at the same time do not wish to be ignored. Any hole in a water proof shell, is a risk, we assume you have weighed up these risks (including sea cocks) on our behalf and provided a tool fit for purpose. We have then gone and assumed that a class A boat is capable of doing what the is said on the tin. It appears that month after month there appears another response to my original discussion. Lack of communication is not a response but a failure and is how wars start, I give you the opportunity to, on this forum, discuss, to your loyal audience. We await your response.

Dear fellow owners,
We are pushing shipyards to produce potentially dangerous boats. If we stop buying boats with hull openings, batteries which are thrown in the bilge (not in a batterie box), cables lying in the bilge and rudders held together by foam and if we check the quality and number of the thru hulls before buying they will not produce such boats anymore. The boats produced now are the reflexion of our wishes - this is marketing. It is finally our fault. Edited by panos - 15 January 2014 at 23:14 |

That is called progress, but at what cost.
Yes there are more of us able to enjoy the sport and may have more leisure time too. But gone are the days of withstanding cannon fire and carrying a chippy (wood craftsman) on board and throwing buckets of waste over board (although you think that still continued in some areas !) Most of us don't expect to turn the key and everything works every time. What we ought to expect that the very outer shell to conform and the key elements within, to the rating standards set internationally.

I have posted my opinion about the CE mark several times but I will try to say it in another way:
Before granting the CE Ocean category to a yacht the surveyor should sail the boat over the Atlantic (with a crew). |
