Finally no ignition key anymore. This summer I'd invest 9 Euro's in two IP75 Stainless 'Mini In The Box'switches and by-passed the ignition key. Works like a dream ;-)

Interesting,  my Hanse is 2003 and has no ignition key,  Beneteau I had before had no Key. I have always been happy with this as you can't start the engine without unlocking the boat and turning on the power. However,  I do think a key is a good idea

what about preglow ? saw a thread that the Yanmar doesn't have any glowplugs. Not sure about mine, never used them, because of sailing in warm area Big smile

Ulrich, the bottom one is start only, I still use the stop button on the Yanmar panel.
Never glow sailing in 3-30'C.

Thanks coriolis2,

It was very inspiring. The design meant that someone had to hold the key in the pocket while sailing or keep the key in the ignition with the risk the key would fall out of the ignition and wash overboard. Either options are not good, if you were in a situation that you needed to start the motor immediately. Buying a new keyless frame from Yanmar is not really an option as the cost is ridiculously high. However, thanks to a bit of 3D printing, and voila a brand new keyless motor interface Smile It has been installed throughout the 2018 season and works like a charm.

Uli, I´ll be happy to do a little production if there is interest.

You could buy a panel from Yanmar, but it cost between £850-£1000!!

I´m playing a bit around on a version 2. Which will have a glass cockpit replacing the old odometer using a 5" LCD screen (I´m one of the unlucky that have a faulthy enginehour meter). But let´s see...

Hi
Thanks for offering the file to get it printed by myself.
Anyway I have the same problems with the engine hour meter.
I also planned to exchange it including some gadgets for the anchor winch. Playing around with a cam to control the chain as it sometimes stuck when getting the anchor up, due to the small chain storage and the location of the winch.
How did you plan to get the hours counting? Ignition on or from the alternator? How will you drive the 5" display, micro controlled or Rasp ?
I would be interested in sharing experience.

Best regards
Uli

I´m using Arduino as a controller. I´ve made an assembly with a LCD shield. It´s a very cheap and fairly easy solution. The timer is a bit tricky as, measuring from “power on” is easy but power off means there is no time to write it to the eprom. The counter in the old VDO measured from “power on” and a capacitor held the power long enough to write the hours to the eprom when switched off (the reason for not just overwrite the data on the eprom every minute would be the limited number of rewrite a eprom have).

To avoid including a capacitor, I programmed it such that the counter starts when power is on and the oil and alternator indicator is on (this is always the case when just before starting the motor). And switching the counter off when the state comes back i.e. that the stop button have been pushed. That give me time to write the new data to the eprom on the Arduino, before switching off the power.

I have the same issue with the chain as well. Let me know if you come up with a solution.

Actually, one of the reason for including the 5” glass cockpit (beside looking cool) was that it could include other features. E.g. I was thinking of installing a rev counter to measure the meter of anchor chain put out and displaying it on the display. Loads of other stuff could be included as well. But, big but, all this takes time, sigh….

And sorry for this becoming more of an engineering than sailing thread Confused

Hi Mojoraven,

This looks perfect!
My type B panel is broken after somebody accidently stepped on the key. Any chance that this design goes into production? Is the offer to share the file for 3D printing still valid?

Thanks,

JohannesL

Hi JohannesL

Thanks for your message and sorry for the slightly delayed reply. Sorry, that your panel got broken.

I’ve made a production of 10 and I still have 4 left, so if you are still interested I can send you one after Easter. You can see the prices in the link below.

https://boatpanel.dk" rel="nofollow - boatpanel.dk

If you are looking for a full refurbisment for the tachometer, I’ve been able source a replacement LCD for the hourmeter and replacment red LEDs instead of the bulb ones (which keeps dying). I don’t have these in stock, though. But I can re-order if there is any interest in this.

Happy Easter to all
