Here are some photos from this year´s summer vacation on ‘Sally’. We sailed
her from The Netherlands to Denmark during a two week period including a couple
of days sailing on The Standing Mast Route from Lemmer, NL to Lauwersoog, NL
and also through the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal from Brunsbüttel, DE to Kiel, DE.
On the Standing Mast Route just outside
Leeuwarden, NL, ’Sally’ is waiting her turn to sail under a busy train bridge.
In Borkum, DE we found a mooring spot in Burkana Hafen which also hosts quite a bit of commercial vessels. In Cuxhaven, DE we saw this beast! A Beautiful Hanse 675… drooling mode: On! ‘Sally’ in the locks at Brunsbüttel, DE, about to enter the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal.
Half way through the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal we found a tranquil spot in Rendsburg, DE. Busy day at the Holtenau, DE lock. ‘Sally’ with three large container ships, a German Navy patrol boat and around 15 other cruisers…
Bagenkop, DK – Situated on the Island of Langeland this small sized marina is quite popular with cruisers. During the holidays, all berths usually get filled up by late afternoon. Cruising from Bagenkop, DK to Kragenæs, DK. Shipmate Felix is at the helm. Steady as she goes!
No stress… Kragenæs, DK Just outside Kragenæs, DK we caught quite a bit of sea-weeds with the prop!
The Storestroem Bridge is straight ahead! Passing the Faroe Bridge (Farøbroen) which also connects the island of Zeeland with Falster.
Inbound Stubbekøbing, DK. Time for some ‘relaxed’ cruising. Wife at the helm, captain is taking a nap ;-)
Kids in the dinghy at Stubbekøbing, DK. Beautiful view from our mooring spot at Stubbekøbing, DK. Sadly we haven´t had that many days this summer with blue skies… but wind has been good!

Thanks for sharing! It brings memories back from when Emilia sailed through the Kiel canal to Hamburg. We also sailed through Stora Bält at that time. It was actually in 2007, so already ten years ago. Time flies!
Your 342 looks much better than the 675 you spotted but then again, I am biased.
Keep the pictures coming. I really enjoyed following your trip.

Last weekend we cruised to Flakfortet. It´a personal favourite of mine.
From
Wiki: Flakfortet, meaning sand-shoal fortress, is a sea fort located
on the artificially built island of Saltholmrev, in the Øresund between Copenhagen and Saltholm.
The island and fort are simply known as Flakfortet; the name of the
island; Saltholmrev, meaning the reef near Saltholm, is seldom used.
Flakfortet
was the last of three artificial islands that the Danes created to defend the
entrance to Copenhagen's harbor. (The other two are Trekroner
Fort (the oldest) and Middelgrundsfortet.) Flakfortet's guns covered
the Hollænderdybet channel between Middelgrundsfortet and Saltholm,
and the Flinterenden channel between Sweden and Saltholm. Eventually Flakfortet
became more of a site for anti-aircraft weapons than for coastal
artillery. Its military functions ended in 1968.
Flakfortet
is currently used for recreational purposes such as concerts, and the site has
a restaurant and yacht moorings. During the summer, a ferry company, Spar
Shipping, has five scheduled trips per day to the island, with the trip
from Nyhavn taking about 40 minutes each way. There is an
overnight hostel on the island too.

This week we spent a couple of days in Malmö City Dockan Marina. A very cool place, as it is situated right in the middle of a new upcoming part of Malmö.
There was also a cool 575 in town!
We enjoyed some nice winds on the way back, unfortunately only for 30 minutes or so. Then the wind died completely and we had to motor home...

I have sailed passed Flakfortet many times and wondered what kind of island it is. Having read your post I have set my mind to visit it the next time I am around. I didn't even know there was a harbour there.
I have been to Dockan though. I met up with the wonderful people on the Danish 342 Amani there a few years ago.
Thanks for sharing those wonderful pictures. You boat looks fabolous.

I stretched my season to the end of September this year and had some great sailing, plus a couple of stormy periods. Normally I lift out during the first week of September. I am interested that you are still sailing towards the end of October. How are you finding the weather and temperature?

Hi Johan!
Flakfortet is only a short trip from my home port, so we go there regularly. A very cool place for the kids! Going there on a summer afternoon after work is just a blast. On weekends though, the place gets quite crowded. There is a nice restaurant there as well.
Ah fabolous... I'm not so sure about that ;-) But next season Sally will be fabolous (winter activities pending) :-O

Thanks for stopping by!
Actualy we sail untill early/mid November. Autumn is a fantastic time for sailing. Wind is almost a guaranteed factor (often too much!) but temperature wise it doesn´t get too cold until end November. Staying overnight in the boat simply comes down to turning the heater on. Looking at the country side from the sea is another selling point... colours are amazing! You should try it out - at least keep the boat floating until mid October ;-)
One of my kids sail Opti and their season carries on until week 42.

It´s that time of year... time to get out of the water. Sally was hoisted out last weekend and she now sits patiently awaiting spring to arrive.

Yes, the Copenhagen area is our playground. We tend to switch 'home port' depending on space availability etc.
Yesterday I finished painting and polishing... just in time before launch tomorrow. The 'to-do' list is still quite long, but as long as we are safe and seaworthy, we're good to go.
I needed to instal a new wind instrument. As I have decided to focus on running all boat data primarily on mobile devices, this neat product came to my attention.

Yes, I ordered it directly via the company in Spain and it was swiftly delivered via Fedex.
Install was straight forward - just downloaded the accompanying app and connected via Bluetooth.
So far I have only been testing the device in my home garden but first impression is very positive.

I wonder how you connect it to the rest of your system? In order to get True Wind you need to combine the wind data with the boat's speed.

There is a gateway available where you can share data via NMEA0183.
The unit itself has a number of sensors, including an accelerometer. I pressume that all these senors combined can calculate the difference between true and apparent wind.

Thanks :-) The old one really needed to be replaced.
Today was 'one of those days' where the interior looked more like a toolshed rather than a boat saloon.
But I managed to get a few more check marks on my ever lasting to-do list. Coolbox spring-type hatch holder replaced; Toilet seat hinges replaced; 220V Power outlet frames replaced; Cockpit table installed; Backstay replaced with 'Dyna One'... then it started raining...
Here's a few pics:
The 'dirty' job... replacing toilet hinges.
Cockpit table in place. The 'quick release' system makes it a breeze to mount and remove when not in use.

Hi Heiko I've used the Lewmar Universal Table Mounting Kit w/Quick Release (Product ID 89400420). It's no longer being produced by Lewmar so it can be a bit tricky to source it. I found it via a German dealer https://sailtec.de/startseite.html" rel="nofollow - https://sailtec.de/startseite.html The table is a standard teak table (non-Lewmar).

One thing that I really had been looking forward to this season was to install the sprayhood and cockpit tent. I'm not particularly overwhelmed by the looks of such a tent, but it's soooo practical when you cruise around in Scandinavia. Sorry for the cluttered photo, I just snapped it quickly as I was leaving the boat this afternoon.
The solution was manufactured by Swedish company 'Kapell & Annat' using Sunbrella 5087 'Flanelle Plus' fabric.

Many thanks - very helpful. I like how you have reduced some of the diameters. Assume that you used SVB24. The reviews of the rope seem very positive. Some report splicing is difficult.
Good luck with the installation. It will be interesting to hear how you find the ropes in use.

Yes, I purchased all the Gleistein stuff via SVB. I have used Gleistein for a number of years and found the quality to be very good.
We did a short sail yesterday (in very light winds) to test the new running rigging. All went well exept for the 'topping lift' which had become stuck between the two wheels at the top of the mast (of course!). Never had a problem with this before (also used 6mm previously), so I gather it must have been a moment of bad luck! Never the less, I need to climb the mast sometime soon...

It turned out to be quite the talking point at the marina, as no one else had ever seen a mast ladder 'in action' before! It was an easy set-up, and I managed to climb the mast twice. You can actually see me in the last photo waveing and dangling from the bosun's chair (which I used as an extra safety precaution).

Actually this was my first visit since they put up the bridge into the canal. Even though we are in October, our bridge opening caused quite a long queue of cyclist and pedestrians. In the summertime, the hourly opening often causes severe chaos. I wonder how the city even managed to exist before the bridge was build...

Last time I was there, in 2015, Wilders Plads was full so we got in contact with the nearby boat club who offered us a berth. The same bridges opened - and closed behind us - and it was after that that we realised that there had been some misunderstanding so all the empty berths were the size to accommodat rowing boats, and there we were locked in and could not go anywhere!
So one of us got ashore to talk to the bridge operator who made a few calls and then opened the bridges outside the schedule and directed us to a great place outside another boat in Wilders place.
Fond memories.

That's what I thought. I have never been successful when trying to tack with either sail. You need both even if you reef them to a minimum.
I no longer have two reefs in my main. I removed the line for the first reef as I never used it. When it is time for reefing, in my opinion you can take the second reef right away. I think that up to that point you can get very far by just trimming the main and spill wind.
