Last two times flying my Elvstrom gennaker, in light winds, despite great care assuring the uphaul/downhaul line was inboard and clear going up, the head of the sail/sock twists, wrapping the uphaul/downhaul around the sock, making dousing with the sock difficult (once) or impossible (another time). Once I raise the sock with the halyard, I can see the uphaul/downhaul wrapped around the twisted sock, right near the internal block in the sock, and while I can raise the sock fairly easily, dousing via the sock is becoming an adventure. I can raise the furled sail/sock with the spin halyard almost all the way up cleanly, and then, the last few feet it develops a twist. It might be worsening when the sock is raised, but it's hard to see once I'm at sail with the sock all the way up. . I'm thinking the spin halyard might have developed some twist over the last year or so. I've never thought to untwist it. Should I install a swivel shackle at the head/halyard connection? How beefy a fitting? Take a dozen turns to untwist the halyard? Any other ideas? The sock is also getting beat up from chafe from the control line. Are you sure it is the halyard? i had the same problem some weeks ago. In my case i took the genny at the end of the sailingday to the shore and took it completely out of the sock. Than i removed any twist in the sock and in the genny and fitted all together again. Now it works perfect again. It was the first time after using the genny several seasons.. ------------- Blake 370

Resolved by unpacking chute from sock and taking 4 twists or so out of the sail and the uphaul/downhaul. Working perfectly now. While there is a swivel shackle on the halyard and a soft shackle inside, I'll take the halyard twist out routinely on each raise going forward, and pack things more carefully. ------------- Kipwrite |
