On Saturday Legacy participated in the St Joseph River Yacht Club (Michigan, USA) Rhumbline Regatta. Since our crew had not had any spinnaker practice this season we chose to sail in the Jib and Main (JAM) fleet. Due to rain storms and the forecast of lighting the race was delayed about 90 minutes. We started in about 6 knots of breeze, overcast with relatively flat seas on Lake Michigan. While sailing the 5 leg, 6.1 mile course, we encountered winds 5-25 knots from almost every direction and fog that limited sight to about 2 boat lengths. It wasn't unusual to see a shape suddenly forming 15 meters off the bow and then realizing that it was a boat headed right toward you! Lots of quick course changes just to avoid collisions. Too risky to rely on the Rules of Racing. We were about 100 meters behind a boat which owed us time (about 30 seconds per mile) for most of the race. On a downwind leg we began gaining on her. Then we both approached a mark when the wind picked up from 15 to 20 knots. We were both over canvassed. I had a full main and a 155 (#1) genoa up. I rounded up into the wind and it took me several tries to get around the last mark. When Legacy finally settled down, I could see that the lead boat was having problems. She had dropped her genoa but seemed unable to get a replacement up. We headed to the finish, about 0.7 miles away and Legacy was first across the finish line and was scored first, receiving a very attractive trophy and flag. All in all, an exciting and challenging race. Next distance race is 6/22, across Lake Michigan, from west to east, approximately 70nm.

Congratulations! Nice to have a description of the race rather than just the result.
