All 371 owners and potential owners might like to know that Schueddelfrost , the Hanse 371 currently being campaigned at Cowes Week, came 1st over the line by over a minute and 1st on handicap in the first race on Saturday. Sunday's race had different wind conditions and Schueddelfrost came in third over the line and 4th on handicap. She is currently standing at 2nd place in the series with only a Swan 46 ahead.

Monday started with light and variable winds but with occasional gusts, which required a change to the heavy no 1 genoa. The wind dropped away again as they approached the mark called Wadworth off the Island shore near Yarmouth. They sat tantalisingly close to the mark with their anchor down for about 20 minutes, eventually sailing round the mark on a faint breeze to run back to the finish with the benefit of a 2.6 knot tide. Schueddelfrost was 2nd over the line and 2nd on handicap after five and a half hours of demanding sailing.

Schueddelfrost's current position is 1st overall in IRC Class 4.

Hanse 341 Spice of life

Schueddelfrost continued it's impressive performance yesterday coming 2nd over the line at the end of the race. Unfortunately, an earlier close call with a backmarker resulted in a protest against the Hanse 371. Despite strong representations the protest was upheld and Schueddelfrost's result for Tuesday was disallowed.  Hopefully, if they can maintain their impressive performance for the rest of the week, this race can be discarded.

Race 5 for Class IV of Skandia Cowes Week was the most exciting so far with the lead changing hands many times during the race of 3 hours and 40 minutes.

The first downwind start of the week gave a new dimension to the racing with the 48 foot Swan Jacobite powering ahead to lead at the first mark, followed by the Dutch Swan 46 Vrijheid. On the subsequent upwind and downwind legs Vrijheid, Schueddelfrost and Kimanchee Eve (a Ker 32) took their turn to lead the fleet.

On the penultimate leg a severe rain squall caused many difficulties for the crews and Schueddelfrost  burst through to 2nd place on the water and excellent sailing brought her to within 13 seconds of Jacobite (a boat 11 feet longer) at the finishing line.

 Day 6 of Skandia Cowes Week was not a good day tactically for Schueddelfrost although she once more demonstrated her speed in the water.

Realising that they were over the line at the start, the crew turned her round and re-started. Unfortunately video replay showed that they had failed to go back quite far enough (by 6 ft)! Not knowing this, they still fought a tough race and in the process broke their spinnaker pole in the gusty conditions.

With 2 races to go, the fresher wind conditions are better suited to their main rival, the Swan 48.  However, with a new spinnaker pole on board, the crew are determined to get a good result today and tomorrow.

Race 7 IRC Class 4.

It was the turn of IRC Class 4 to use a committee boat start in the eastern Solent off Stokes Bay. The weather forecast for westerly winds of force 4 - 5 increasing to 6 to 7 was accurate and the wind steadily increased through the race, with Hanse 371 Schueddelfrost achieving a top speed of 16.2 knots on the last spinnaker run to the finish at the Royal Yacht Squadron line off Cowes.

These conditions favoured the larger, heavier boats and Schueddelfrost achieved a 10th in this race, which was probably the best under the conditions.

Day 8 – the last race of Skandia Cowes Week for Class 4, started with a short leg to Raymarine buoy off the Beaulieu River, with the benefit of a west going tide. The second leg was a keenly contested run to the east against the tide up the mainland shore, rock hopping to take best advantage. Schueddelfrost,  the Hanse 371,  scored well on this leg having been forced to re-start as she was over the line at the start time.

Schueddelfrost made large gains on the fleet leaders on the first and second downwind legs from Royal Thames to Marsh, a distance of 4.7 miles. Unfortunately the wind failed to co-operate and the converging Class 3 and Class 4 fleets were forced into an ugly raft at Marsh where the committee boat signalled an unexpected shortened course for Class 4 who then had just a long beat with the tide to the finish at the Royal Yacht Squadron line.

The Hanse 371 Schueddelfrost has shown this week that she combines easy sail handling with excellent sailing characteristics and has gained many admirers over the week.

The runaway winner of the class was the Swan 48 Jacobite whose experienced crew and handicap made the best of the conditions  that suited her.  Schueddelfrost scored a credible 4^th in class, after the two race yachts Capitalism  and  Zarafa.

That are numbers which makes you smile. Not only the 371 is a very fast boat but also the 341. Last year on our maidentrip on the North Sea from Ijmuiden to Stellendam we had 15 knots on the GPS. 15 KNOTS!!!!!! That was very fast. It was also surfing down a roller. The rest of the trip between 8 - 12 knots. The wind was 6 to 7 almost from behind. We had a very small mainsail and the normal jib. We didn't expected that a 34 foot sailingyacht could be so fast. We were very pleasantly surprised. Hanseyachts are very fast yachts!!!!
