I found this on my new to me 371 when I started removing anti foul yesterday:    What do I do? Is it cosmetic or potentially dangerous?

Hi Andreas N It would be nice if you stated in your profile if you are sailing in Timbuktu or Loch Ness, and a building # of your Hanse is also appreciated. I have mentioned this a few times to other myhansers.................................(a little copy/paste speeds things up) Before asking your questions in the forum, use the search function, because maybe your question already has been answered just a month ago, and in this case of rudder problems, there are dozens of post from the last 15 years. 1) Search 2) Advanced Search 3) Find Posts ------change from 6 months to any date 4) Write your subject: Corroded rudder post,Rudder, mast, battery ..........whatever. 5) Mark "Search Forum" as "All
Forums" You will find, that your state of corrosion is a little more than cosmetic, but (IMHO) not yet dangerous. BUT something has to be done. A button anode should be mounted to the aluminium rudder quadrant, see Jefa homepage. Furthermore I can see that there is a liberal layer of antifouling near the rudder. There has to be a circle of 20-25 cm around the rudder axle where no antifouling with copper is present. If there is electrical connection from the hull through the paint to the rudder post, you ask for trouble. Copperpaint on the nylon bearing also has to be removed. All this I wrote to you is already covered in a multitude of posts. What is your problem?: Corroded rudder post - try to use advanced search with this text, and information will appear. The Jefa staff are nice people, send your photos via email, and ask if you need a new rudder. This photo shows my rudder, and the corrosion that made me install a button-anode. The other shows the needle bearing with an allowable tolerance. Thank you for replying. After a discussion with jefa, I will put a sleeve over the rudder post + add a slightly bigger bottom bearing to account for the increased thickness. I also suspect there might be some corrosion because of the auto pilot.

The antifoul is far too close to the rudder post. That will cause such corrosion. You may have other faults but that could explain it all. I've seen similar. |

Update: Jefa was very helpfull. After removing the rudder for closer inspection the damage was severe. The rudder was deemed unrepairable. New rudder is under production. |

You should have a non copper based antifoul like International trilux for 250mm around the rudder post.
Your issues i think stem from having a copper anitfoul so close to the shaft. If your earth cable is attached to the rudder stock i would remove that also. ------------- Stephen 2010 H400 #691, Auckland, New Zealand |

I have a zinc "fish" wired to the rudder post (on the inside). I drop it over the stern when in the marina, to protect the post. Works best if you do this BEFORE corrosion appears. ------------- Grahame Tangleberry 371-092 aviadesign.com |
