I woke up to our air conditioner stopped this morning, in the middle of a very hot/humid span of days.    When I looked to see why, the compartment with the seacocks and raw water pump was full of water and a leak was streaming out of the raw water manifold.   The one which takes the pump output and feeds the four zones.

Apparently the manifold was NOT bronze, but brass and yields zinc as an anode.   It eventually weakens and leaks.   Disappointing quality.

I would like to have taken more time to design something better, but we *NEEDED* AC to come back in a few hours.   I therefore went to Defender Marine and picked up standard GROCO bronze fittings (solid, dependable, proven) and assembled the new one to look like the old one.

So far so good, and the AC works fine.    I would suggest that if you have one of these you keep your eye on it.   You might also want to be sure your seacocks are shut when you leave the boat as it could pop at any time.   I know many owners on docks keep their AC on dehumidify when they are gone (as do we) but inspection is still worth doing on a regular basis.

Picture 1 - the leak....

as you can see,  NOT a joint failure.  Middle of the fitting.

Picture 2 - The new and the old

Not just the pipe, but the ball valves were corroding and would have broken over time.  The whole thing, valves and all....

Picture 3 - in place and running

The replacement fits fine, and is doing the job.  The bronze will last forever.  Its certainly heavier than the original.  Now all I need to do is clean up the water and dirt in the compartment.

Rick,

Our manifold looks like your mark2 version and is still shiny after 6 years.

Great job Rick. FYI, my 588 came with a “new and improved” manifold. I’m not sure of the material but it looks like stainless as do the valves. Third season and still looks new. Also, be sure those couplings you used are bronze. They look a bit too shiny!

Nice..   I should check and see if the part for that is on Boatoon.

These are all marine grade bronze.    They will go green soon enough.

yours is bullet proof. I’ll take bronze over stainless.

I caught mine before it fell apart.

Oddly, my low quality manifold was not tied into the grounding system, nor was the AC seacock, which I also replaced and grounded.
