Dear 508 owners,

we ordered a new 508 for march 2022 and looking forward to the delivery.

What exactly type of Yanmar 80HP engine will be delivered?
We dinīt found any clear specification in the order oder specification from HANSE.
Only "approx. 80 HP"

At Yanmar website we found 4JH80. Will this be the current modell?



And what fuel consumption do you have in normal conditions approx 7 kn SOG?
We found that figure at Yanmar for the 4JH80:

Assuming a relatively modern engine, I believe fuel economy will depend on the full system, and the engine may be the smaller part of that equation. Hull, top-sides wind resistance, propeller, how clean the bottom, and engine all play a roll. On our 505, with a volvo D275, we get ~3.4 liters/hr at 6 kn, and about ~4.25 liters/hr at 7kn. This is real world cruising conditions, which are sometimes not very nice. 

As an aside, I wish we had a smaller engine, with no turbo. We can exceed 9kn with our D2-75 75hp Volvo. We cruise long distances, and running fast enough to keep the turbo spun up and carbon deposits down is too fast and too much fuel. To run at preferred speed of 6.5kn, we must run at around 1700rpm, which is lower than Volvo recommends for cruising. At 2000 rpm, engine is happy, but we are going 7.5kn and using a lot more fuel. Even going into a chop, and 30kn of wind, 2000 rpm is enough power for us. We never use the full power, which is 2700rpm, and 9kn, except when we are testing, or trying to burn away the carbon. I think our boat would perform perfectly, even in adverse wind and chop with the non turbo D2-55. With that would come lower initial cost, lower maintenance (no turbo), and run at more optimum load, hence less carbon problems. I don't know if your 508 came with engine choice, but I would definitely select a smaller engine if available.

Thanks a lot! Very intresting. The consumption is very high. I thought bigger engine is better.
But we havenīt a choice. Meanwhile we know the 508 will come with the 80 HP Yanmar turbo.

I just order #121 of the 508 and was wandering on your first question. Did you have a chance to find out the fuel efficiency of the 508 80hp engine?

I don't think the 80hp engine is required for my 458 where it is an option.  I have the 57hp which is the same engine without a turbo.
The turbo has several disadvantages including high revs required and consequently higher fuel consumption.
Over 4 seasons (550 hours) I have averaged 2.5l/h.  I use the motor on passage reluctantly and generally not more than 1,800rpm which gives 6kts.  In more challenging conditions the consumption goes up to 3-4l/h but this is balanced by the majority of our use which is low speed manoeuvring at the start and end of a passage.

Totally not.
The 4JH57 got 2.190ccm and the 4JH80 got 2.000ccm.

Interesting.  They have the same bore and stroke (88 mm x 90 mm).  I always thought that the capacity was calculated from this.

Yes - curious. 88 x 90 gives a capcity of 2189cc.

In my manual the 4JH57 got 88x90 and 4JH80 got 84x90.
