we are club racing our Hanse 301 they have given us a rating of .900 which is the same as a race spec impala 28,ur boat is still in cruising mode, furling jib,, lazy jack reefing main. Does anyone know the correct rating for our boat? Thanks

Hanse 301 rating seems to be a black art  Standard NHC for the 301 is 0.920 I believe, I've seen IRC boats rating 0.881, and in PSC's club class Hobo has rated anywhere from 0.838 to 1.000 depending on how they rated everyone else! I've seen us rated level with Impalas, Maxi 1050/1100's and in the RTIR over the last few years we rate 0.981 in the ISC Rating System equal to Dehler 34s and Oceanis 37s. Having said that, Hobo has won in both the PSC Spring/Autum Series and in the Portsmouth Regatta Club class in the past based on their handicap guesses, so can't be too bad. We are regularly in the top third in the RTIR and one year we even managed 5th in class (we are not serious racers but we do try our best and carry a spinnaker). Anyway hope you enjoy your racing whatever handicap you get! Just an update on this, in the RTIR there is a Hanse 291 (very similar to 301) "White Mischief" that rates 0.880 in IRC. The Impalas rate from 0.880 to 0.889 ------------- Hobo Hanse 301 GBR 2996L |

Hi, I'm going to be the new owner of Wild Cherry very soon (assuming all goes well). I plan to race her at Torbay and Dartmouth regatta's and have begun the process of IRC rating which I am finding very complicated. Has anyone got the P,E, J, FL, STL, SPL data to populate the form as I cant find it anywhere? I have rough calcs for the main and genoa (140) and try to measure the spinnie and cruising shute. Many thanks Crispin My other boat is a B14 Aussie Skiff based on a Sydney Harbour 18 ft Skiff

Hi Crispin, when I originally submitted the info to IRC for Night Train, I mostly used the Hanse info which gave me a far higher handicap than I expected. I talked to IRC about this and they said overhangs should be measured when the boat is empty. Their definition being turn it upside down and see what falls out! No sails, anchor, chain, personal belongings, spares etc then measure the overhangs very carefully. We went down 20 points after that ! Good luck Paul ------------- Paul - Night Train - 415 #136 |

thanks, very helpful. If anyone has a set of numbers for the rig that would be great as I dont fancy going aloft to get them! I'm new to the IRC ratings having raced PY dinghies for the past 40 years! Steep learning curve....  |

I had all of this measured in 2013 by Andy Freemantle for new sails made by Peter Sanders. I don’t think I ever had the measurements myself but Peter certainly does as he made at least one other set of sails for a sister boat from them. Worth trying saunders sails as they will certainly have the numbers.
