Hi everyone

We are looking to fit a new charplotter to our Hanse 300 and are just trying to decide on the final installation location. The pro installer has suggested the cockpit bulkhead to the starboard side of the hatch.

Given that the unit will require a cut out which is 186mm (W) by 126mm (H), I am slightly concerned about the impact of such a relatively large cut out on the integrity of the bulkhead.

Does anyone have any experience of fitting a chartplotter (or other instruments) in this location?

Thoughts much appreciated!

we have a Simrad NSS7 mounted into the starboard side cockpit moulding (ie to the immediate right of the companionway). For what it’s worth we also have an old Garmin128 GPS mounted to the immediate left (port side) of the companionway.

Both of these instruments are mounted through the coach roof and require a cut out in the inner moulding behind.

Neither has compromised the integrity of a bulkhead because the 301/300 has two bulkheads (one between the saloon and the forward cabin, and one between the lazarette locker and the stern berth/rear of the heads). The mounting position for cockpit instruments in the coachroof coaming has nothing to do with the structural bulkheads.

So assuming you mean to put instruments in the cockpit/coachroof coamings bulkhead integrity will not be compromised.

Keeping it simple, the thing you are proposing to cut a hole in is not a structural bulkhead. Fit your plotter and don’t worry.

Thanks Bitbaltic, thats very helpful information. As you correctly point out, I should have described the location as being the cockpit coaming (rather than a bulkhead).

good to hear- just go with your installer and mount the plotter as you require. No worries.

Edited to add, we have had these instruments for c.10 years and of course there is no stress or damage to the moulding in consequence.

Cheers
