The Hanse 348 is on my short-list for our next/last sailboat. So, I'd love to hear the answer to this question from current or former 345/348 owners:

What do you wish you had know about the 348 before you bought one?

How good the B&G autohelm steer by wind angle is.

Also a polar plot for a 345, which I am still looking for. Ideally including self tracking jib, 105 % genoa and a Code 0.

And how to put the secondary folding anchor together, which also continues to defeat me.

I also love how good the autopilot is in wind mode, especially upwind.

Hanse publish a polar for most boats so I'm surprised that you haven't found this, although it will be for standard jib and crossover sail. Are you registered with Sentinel which gives access to all your boat manuals?

I used a Brittany type anchor with short length of chain and rope rode as a stern anchor when in the Baltic, but the locals mostly use a tape drum which is certainly easier to stow.  As far as I know there is no folding anchor option as standard.

My experience was with a 385 (and now 458).  Mostly I wish I'd known how much better the Hanse sails than my previous Beneteau.  I should have upgraded to Hanse many years sooner!

Excellent thanks.

I have now tried to register for Sentinel Marine / Hanse Owners, although I think this may be easier if you have just brought a new boat from Hanse. I do not have a QR code on anything. I have downloaded the app too.

The folding anchor is a Fortress FX-23. Lives in a narrow bag in the bottom of the starboard cockpit locker. Last time we used it, it was dark, -2 degrees C, in Loch Long, and proved somewhat tricky to assemble. Note to self - practice in better conditions. Eventually, it did work and we could run out two anchors our so we could anchor on a narrow shelving spot.

Excellent thanks, I was after the H345, but that is there too. I think the mast is 0.5 to 1 m shorter on the 345.

Comparing the polars using the tool above, they seem quite similar.

I shall look forward to going 9 knots at 120 deg, in 20 knots of wind, but I guess we need an asymmetric up for that, which may fray my nerves.

If you are serious about using polars & have iPhone, iPad or Mac take a look at https://pbase.com/pekkal/display0183m" rel="nofollow - https://pbase.com/pekkal/display0183m and follow the link to User's Guide:
"...
VMG optimized beat and run angles are then displayed in the Wind Display when beating or running. Target speed for current wind speed and wind angle can be selected in General Display. The speed is displayed either in boat speed units, or as a percentage of the current boat speed.

When active polar is OCR extended type, run and beat VMGs (in boat speed units) can be selected.

Pekka - That looks cool. Quite some achievement. I have a Mac, iPad and iPhone. Our H345 has a B&G Zeus Touch 8 (2012) that provides GoFree, so hopefully I can connect the phone.

To get access to the H345 polar, I assume I have to follow the instructions for file creation and upload. This appears a bit demanding, but I can try. Failing that SV Amelia (Bavaria 35) may be close(?) and is already available in the app.

Another question: In the polars the initial and final lines contain beat and run VMGs. Do these reference each other? So when it says 10 knots, 41 deg, target a 4.1 knot boat speed, this means from the first two lines on the polar, the optimum VMG is shown in those first two lines? And the same for Run in the last two lines of data?

It could be said we have gone off topic, but arguably not, because I answered the original question requesting a polar, and now we are discussing using and optimising this polar.

Cool. Ta,
Richard

The polar plot is located in the digital manuals that come with the boat. I tried to attach it here.
