Hello everyone,

Did any of you already replaced one or both pulleys on top of mast for the main halyard?
I have a fullbatten sail and would like to know if exist better quality pulley then the one supplied by Selden?
The main pulley is completely destroyed and the Spinnaker one is not in a great shape....
Thanks for helping and good sailing!
Dom

hello
We have them replaced 2 times in 11 years. First time after 3 years already.
We have also fullbattens mainsail.
Selden changes the composite pulleys (sheaves) over the years with a Delrium sleeve inside.
They are better but still not good enough to hold the forces on the halyard on our Hanse 545 2010.
After 7 years again broken.
I can live with a live time of 7 years and 20.000 NM.

Thanks for your answer, interesting, but the info I need is the size of the sheave, and yes, I can also live with 1 sheave in 6 years, but if I can upgrade the product, it's even better....

I don't know if they installed the same mast on the 545 and the 575?

our Selden mast is C304
The old part number of the sheaves is 504-337 the new 504-342-01 90mm dia 16mm dia shaft 16mm Max line dia
When you change the sheaves you better change the shaft also.
Selden upgrade the Allu alloy a few years ago
Part number 172-046

Thanks a lot Wild!

I just check my mast ref. and it's the same, so I am almost done, just hope it won't take too long to receive the new ones...But thanks for your help again!

We lost the pulley as well.
Can you give a brief description how to replace it?
Is it necessary to take off masttop?

Julian,

We had our main halyard and topping lift sheaves replaced recently. On the Selden website it states the sheaves can be replaced without taking the mast out. The cover plate at the top of the mast need to come off to access the sheaves and axle. Suggest you do both sheaves and the axle at the same time. The Selden website shows the access for the in-mast furling mast but it is similar to the standard mast. We had a rigger do the work. At the same time we had the rigger replace the gennaker sheave as well. We had replacement sheaves made in Raiatea with a much more substantial bearing material in the center.

Hello
Wayne’s world description is right but the big problem is the fractional rigging of Hanse.
I did the replacement of the main halyard and the topping lift by myself and on paper (Selden website) it’s seems easy, in fact it isn’t it’s take a lot of courage of the rigger.
You need the main halyard and topping lift(as security line) to go up. Once you are to the top you can not lift up and remove the sheaves and the shaft without taking the tension of the main halyard and the topping lift ropes, so you must find a way to secure yourself on the masthead without lines. We have 2 maststeps on 1.5meter below the top (lucky me)
the gennaker and gib halyard are a 2 meters below and useless.
A aerial working platform is a more safer way to do the job.

Thank you both for your replies.
I should have been a little more precise.
We lost the pulley of the gennaker halyard. The little wheel is now inside the mast laying at the mast foot while the axle of the pulley is still up in the mast. (hanging loose)

I was wondering if I can take off the mast block from the outside or if its riveted.
If not from the outside I have to take off masttop.
But like Wild says this can be tricky with the frictional rig. Even the gennaker halyard sits above the jib halyard.

Julian,

We have replaced the gennaker sheave and cassette (comes as a complete unit) twice and it is easy. Two rivets hold it in. Just drill these out and remove the cassette. Hopefully the damaged sheave will come out as well. Looks like the sheave has been missing for sometime. The last cassette we changed we had a machinist remove the new sheave and replace it with one he made which has a stainless steel bearing. It seems the standard Selden sheave is not up to the pressures when you are using a large downwind sail for long periods. The replacement of the cassette only took about 2 hours and is much easier than the mast head sheaves.

Hi guys, the mast in the picture looks substantially different from mine (aluminum, furling main). Can you clarify if the "cassette" is specific to one of the selden models of the mast, or it's the same in all the masts? i am looking to some old pictures when i had dismasted the boat and i can't identify what you call the "cassette".

hello Pzucchel and Julian
Selden call this the jib box.
I replaced mine a few years ago.
It is a strait line job, in this case you can use bought, main halyard and top lifting ( security) line to change the box and easily release the gennaker and the Jib halyard.
Ours wasn’t revited like on Wayne’s world but with 2 Torkx bolts 6mm and tread in the mast. When we rigged our boat we taped the holes in the mast by ourselves.
Looking at your picture Julian it looks to me you have a carbon mast instead the original standard aluminum one

Julian,

These are images of the Selden cassette (Spinnaker or Gennaker box) from our mast. It may be different on your 495 and for a carbon mast. A Selden dealer should be able to tell you what part number your box would be if you can quote them the rigging Identification number which should be on the bottom of the mast. The ID number should be something like - K34-C304-12049-354 160

Box on the right just in image with Selden sheave lower and machined sheave upper not fitted to box at the time.

The old box removed from the mast.

Thanks for the replies.
The mast is aluminum its just wrapped with foil. Thanks to previous owner.

As I was also under the impression it is a Selden mast, but my sail dealer told me it might be a Southern Spars mast. Due to the wrap I can not find the serial number.

I assume it doesn't make a difference which brand of jib box / cassette to install as long as dims are similar and I don't have to enlarge the hole.

Now I just have to get a rivet and climb up the mast.
