Congratulations Pedro!

Do you think the laminate sails made a big difference?

The laminate sails makes a big diference if you are racing, but the standard sails are perfect for the crusing program and last longeeeeeer...

Thank you Pedro.
Although I have not sailed much with laminated sails, I thought the advantage of them to cruising is that the boat heels less during gusts, because the deepest area of the sail does not move backwards as much when loaded.
Some sail makers nowadays claim that their laminated sails last much longer than conventional sails. Do you think that is possible?

Pedro and all,

We'll soon find out how well the standard sails do.  I'm the only Hanse registered for the Hook Race, a nearly 200 mile race leaving Racine, Wisconsin, USA on 7/14 at 1000 Central Time.  I'll be flying the standard self tacker and main and a left over cruising spinnaker (from my masthead Pearson 34).  Wish us luck!

The good news is that we had a fabulous start.  First over the line in our division and we held that lead for about 2 hours.  With the wind blowing 18-20 knots we took a single reef in the main and flew at 8.6-9.2 knots.  Remember, we are sailing with stock sails (100% self tacker and main plus an asym spinnaker left over from my prior Pearson 34!).  However, when the winds died we were at a disadvantage. (The Chicago to Macinac  Race was run at the same time.  They recorded the slowest results ever.)

I soon found out the difference between cruising and racing:  racing requires that you sail no matter what the conditions.

To make a long story short, we finished last in our division and next to last overall (on corrected times using the PHRF system) but, as my daughter-in-law says, it was my best finish ever!  This was my 1st distance race (200 miles)  and the 1st for 2 of our crew.  Only one crew member had a few distance races under his belt.  However, we'll be back next year.  Legacy, our 370e will be better than ever, and her skipper and crew will have more experience.  Look for us to score within top 3 of our division.

Nice story Alan! Thank you.

Light weather sailing is something most cruisers don't practice, they just start the iron sail. But I learned that it really can be fun. On my first Fastnet race it went the same way as with you, but luckily I had a very experienced crewmember on board. As soon he woke up, he started doing things with the sails and with us that amazed the rest of us so much that we called him the wizard for the rest of the race. We were stuck with about 50 other yachts (I suppose also all cruisers) at Lands End with what we considered as no wind. But after his adjustments we just sailed away from the pack. From everybody on board our boat and the other boats the mouth fell open.
