Hi
I am a new member to the forum. I am looking to buy a 301 currently. My last post was about horsepower based on the older versions only having 10HP engine. It seems like from the reply that I would be better looking for a later model - post 2001 with a larger engine.
I have never bought a bought from a brokerage before and it doesnt seem like there is a database of sold boats so I am slightly in the dark knowing what to potentially pay. I realise that things like standing rigging, sail drive seals, condition of sails, general condition has a bearing, but if anyone had some advice I would be very grateful. Thx

You have to find one first. Then start worrying about the above items. If there are lots of things to be considered  then walk away. If it is just a case of (say) rigging, start to ask questions specific & look closer you will get specific answers. But till then find a boat.

As Samuel says, you need to find one. I have a Jan 2000 version.. it has the 10hp engine.. and I have owned my 301 since 2007 so about 15 yrs, I have covered something like 17,000 miles in her, pottering from North wales upto Scotland around skye back down to wales down to South Wales back up again and back down a few times until I travel betweenIsle of Man and Scotland and in all his time I have never ever come across a moment when the 10 HP engine was not enough.. you thoughts on rigging, sails etc are the same questions you should ask when buying any boat and not just a 301.. when buying any decent boat get a survey it will cost a few hundred but it could save you wasting your money on a nail.
But the 301 in my view is a fast cruiser a comfortable cruiser and a very pretty boat and a delight to sail single handed and also with a crew.
But hese are just my view on my boat.. it’s all about individual views.. but out of interest why have you decided on a 301? Just curious..  what ever boat you choose and buy enjoy.

Hi Limey/Chris, I may be interested in letting Hobo go (which is the boat mentioned in the Ken Sturgess book that went round Britain) as I've had her now for 11 years, my kids are all grown up and I now fancy some one-design racing.  I need to fix my current engine problem (Looks like heat exchanger as expected) and was planning to complete the PSC Autumn Series first.  If you are interested PM me I can give you info on the various things we have had done over the years (new standing rigging, new 5-layer Gel coat, etc.).  I've mainly cruised and raced in the Solent with various wins as she is a lovely fast boat and rates well.

Cheers,
Alan.
