I'm becoming guilty of heard mentality after reading on these forums about replacing Hanse's standard seacocks after 5 years...

I'm sure it's a bit over the top, but since I have one that is stiff anyway and next winter the boat will turn 5 years old I'm thinking I may do it this spring.

I'll only do the below waterline ones, so on my 418 that's; The heads inlet, holding tank outlet, galley sink outlet and maybe the saildrive. The through hull skin fittings are already plastic, so I'm thinking of fitting true design for the valves. Anyone know of the sizes involved? Also, any recommendations on jointing compound?

Thanks

Sorry I can't help you with the sizes for your boat, but I was all set to replace the seacocks using the existing Tru-design thru hulls on the 345 earlier in the year when the boat was out for a quick weekend lift out and I found that the valves were very well  bonded to the plastic thru hulls.  Not wanting to get caught with a seeping  thru hull or worse, I deferred the job to the next longer lift out and I now have  replacement thru hulls as well.  They're not too expensive in the overall  scheme of things.
FYI

are you seeing noticeable degradation of the valves, or just being preventative?
The ones on my 2014 look brand new and of similar brand / quality of what i would get to replace them...?

If you are sailing in a lake, you may expect a lifespan of 10-15 years of your seacocks.
But! - if you sail in salty water, do like Hanse Werft recommends, and change after 5 years.
On the outside, the brass looks like new, because the damage is on the inside of the seacock.

hello Matt1

As another post commented - more critical in salt water - the through hull component is Trudesign I believe and the replacement seacocks simply screw in with a matching Trudesign seacock  - you may seek advice from others but I found that the manufacturers website provided all the info I needed together with Sydney agents advising to use them as well as others- in the industry I trust -

If you think it is not an issue and wish to check, simple close your main toilet seacock then very carefully remove the 2 clips and very, very carefully twist and remover the hose - be prepared to be converted to the herd advice if your boat is used in salty water and a salt water flush - if I could work out how to post a photo I would show you mine - the side wall of one virtually crumbled in my hands - I also replaced the seacock on the sail drive keg with a bronze replacement although the Volvo agent inspected it after removal and said it was all ok.

A comment on the way to post photos and documents:
"Quick Reply" is for text only.
"Post Reply" (Find the button on the left hand side) will give you the choice to add a file(pdf), choose the icon to the left of the tree.
The tree-icon "Insert Image" opens the opportunity to add a photo, but most photos are too large, since the limit is 256Kb.
There are a lot of free programs to shrink your photo. I use ViewNX2 from Nikon.

We had pin-hole leaks after just EIGHT years. Replaced all below waterline fittings with TruDesign.

Cheers.

thanks CC
Downloaded an app and this is my “result”- Sea Rambler was launched in May 2014 and I changed them in January 2020- the side walls were very brittle and crumbled when the hose was being removed -

I have joined this club and replaced all seven of my through-hulls and seacocks with true-design parts.   I will say the initiation fee for this club is not cheap!    I didn't do any detailed analysis of the old parts, but they all seemed sound except for the forward holding tank outlet.   When I started to remove the hose from that part it fell off very easily.   It seems the problem was not with the seacock itself but with the part that adapts the threaded seacock to a barbed fitting for the hose.   Perhaps if that adapter could have been removed and replaced a cheaper solution may have worked.   Another note:   I always thought my fittings were all bonded, but when I was removing hoses I realized that Hanse had bonded the aft head fittings and galley sink fitting but not the forward head fittings, where this problem appeared.

Hi Matt,
Have you changed the seacocks already?
Would be interested to hear how it went.
Thank you!

Hi All

Just a question on sea cock sizes on the 415.  I wrote down the sizes some time ago but now questioning them!  I'm not going to be on the boat for a few months so wondered if anyone could confirm them.
Holding tank outlet 1 1/4" (This is the one I'm questioning, seems a little small!)
Galley sink outlet 1"
Heads inlet 3/4"

Cant take a joke, don't buy a boat.

Use thickened epoxy when installing new tru design. They will become a part of the hull and you never have to worry about leakage again. Did this on my 400 2 years ago :)
