Hi,

I'm currently upgrading our Hanse 430e from 2008. The boat has never had a windlass, and I'm considering installing one.

Has anyone done this before, or have photos/descriptions of the cable route and how to access the area under the winch?

Best,
Lars Henrik

The cables for both the windlass and the bow thruster run up the port side of the boat from the electrical connections below the nav desk to the bow.  I do not know exactly how they are routed forward of the berth.  When I had my anchor and all of the chain out of the boat I saw a round access cover at the bottom of the chain locker.  That may help routing the cables.

@Dogscout,

Do you have the dimensions of the bracket that the windlass is bolted to in the anchor locker?  I want to install a windlass in my 430.  I have seen pictures looking down at the windlass where you can see some of the bracket I mentioned but not enough.

Thanks,

Hi, on my 430, the windlass is mounted on an aluminum plate as shown in the pictures. Measuring 40 by 40 cm and 25 cm high. It is not the best arrangement as chain builds up below and jam the winch. Wonder if I should add an angled plate below it to try to avoid this. I have seen other have mounted windlass in front of the locker. Then this problem is avoided.

Thank you Lykke!

This is very helpful.  I imagined that there would be a potential problem with the chain building up even with the relief molded into the shelf of the anchor locker.  Probably a piece of angled plate as you mentioned to form a guide for the chain would solve the problem.

I have seen pictures of custom installs that have a windlass over the chain well using a vertical mounted unit.  That would definitely solve the problem.  Thanks again!!!

I tried an angled plate under the windlass which helped somewhat, but moving it to the front of the locker worked better.   I think I posted both of these in the 400 forum about 15 years ago.  I’ve been happy with the relocation to the front.
