Has anyone got meaningful experience of using the Axiom+ in really bad weather? I got the original Axiom 9 soon after it first came out but the amount of bad weather this season has revealed serious shortcomings.
The question I'd be grateful for an answer to is: does the touchscreen function flawlessly in rain. Mine is mounted on a pod forward of the helm but in heavy rain the screen takes on a life of its own, zooming in and out like a monkey given a camera. I'm aware I can add a keyboard, turn the touch screen off, operate it remotely etc but there's other issues that occur regardless of the weather that dictate a replacement anyway. Just for your amusement these include:
1. Random reboots (the one half-way through a very busy TSS in the English Channel taking AIS with it was particularly interesting...).
2. Change of depth measurement from metres to feet with no warning. Anyone familiar with the depths near St Patrick's Causeway in Cardigan Bay will appreciate how funny we found this - especially as it was in thick fog.
3. Sudden change of time zone. Might sound minor but not when you consider it also alters all the tidal information.
4. Random changes in depths shown. Twice its chosen to show random depths from 2 - 11m for periods of an hour or so before settling (no aeration, weed, Russian submarine under the hull or any other cause) - but at least I should be grateful it was still reading in metres. Gave my wife who was at the helm a shock though when she thought we were going aground - in the middle of the Irish Sea.
Still; at least we got good practice in old-fashioned navigation & pilotage.
I like the better specifications of the Axiom+ yet don't need all the toys on the Pro version. Having got a full suite of kit from Raymarine I'll stick with them provided I can get a reliable MFD that doesn't do comedy. I'm waiting to hear back officially from Raymarine regarding the above issues but I'm minded to go with the Axiom+ if at least one person can reassure me that theirs has behaved itself in heavy rain.
