We have a problem retrieving our anchor chain as it piles up under the windlass and stops the retrieve. We have to put a hand or foot into the anchor locker to spread the chain out every 5 metres. We have the standard factory chain with an upgraded 1500w windlass. We had a similar problem with our 388. This is disappointing in a new design. | Classic issue not limited to Hanse. We have the same in our 400. Planning to install a "slide" for the chain. |

It is disappointing to hear this is happening on the 460. The issue is resolved on the 458 which has a large chain locker in the forward section on the general bow storage. There is a significant drop from the windlass to the floor of the chain locker so plenty of room for our 80m X 10mm chain. This does come at the cost of accessibility. The locker can only be accessed from inside the bow storage and this is usually full of other kit. Stainless chain is more "slippery" but is several times more expensive than galvanized. ------------- H458 #159 Primal Mediterranean cruising |

What windlass does Hanse use for the upgraded version? Quick Prince DP3? You are sure to use a 10mm chain?

Thanks for the comments everyone. I think we have a Quick DP3 1500w capstan windlass. The chain is 60m of 10 mm galvanised. The chain locker is bigger than the 388 but quite shallow and chain falls off the windlass into a pile under the Gypsy instead of spreading out across the full locker. There’s plenty of room but we have to flake the chain by hand and I don’t like sticking my hand in there. A slide chute will be our next move. Pretty basic design problem given it’s a known problem with the 388 as well. The sail locker is huge so space is not an issue. Apart from this we love the 460 and have had a great experience with the quality and delivery handover. It sails really well and is very economical when motoring. ------------- This is not a rehearsal. Go for it. Kiakaha |

Quick is selling the windlass with different gypsys for 8mm and 10mm chains. Hanse is selling the windlass with 8mm and 10mm chains. First question: Did you get the 10mm gypsy? In Germany we use chains by DIN standard an chains by ISO standard. For 8mm Quick offers DIN and ISO, for 10mm only ISO. Second question: Do you have a 10mm DIN or ISO chain?

Although I'm unfamiliar with anchor locker on the 460, if you have less than 30cm drop below the windlass then that is almost certainly your problem regardless of the type of chain. This becomes compounded the more chain you have that gets piled up in a pyramid. After several near misses with my hands on dark nights and rolling anchorages I did the only thing possible which was to move the windlass over the deepest part of the locker; have a look at the links kindly provided by Kjeld. Its a fairly easy job that can help prevent a life-changing injury if your locker is as bad as that on the H400. ------------- H400 (2008) 'Wight Leopard' Gosport, UK |

On the 400, I developed a workaround for the lack of chain drop (pending the project to move the windlass at some point). I put a boat hook handle under the ‘falling’ section of chain (from below the windlass) and lay the boat hook horizontally across the lower pullpit horizontal rails. Position it so the drop of chain is now in the correct spot above the deepest part of the anchor well. Now trigger the uphaul on the windlass. You’ll find you can safely pull the chain up and over the boat hook handle without reaching down under the windlass. It’s safer & fairly quick. If you can’t keep up just pause the windlass. Your chain piles up neatly for deployment later too. The asymmetric position of the windlass actually helps this exercise. Mark

| Hi mr-ludi- I am trying to no avail to get my dealer to find an answer from Hanse for our 460 ordered on the gypsy wheel used in the windlass as I want to put in a 10mm Cromox chain - any chance you know by which standard Hanse measures their standard windlass gypsy wheels? |

Exactly, and if you keep jamming the chain you will destroy the 'stripper' which sits around the gypsy and is what happened to us last January. Fortunately we were able to fix it with the help of an old ships engineer, but far from ideal
