The Hanse 315 is on my shortlist for solo sailing and two-person coastal cruising. I would appreciate any advice about the 315’s sailing performance, build quality, or cockpit and cabin ergonomics. Cheers!

There are 2 vintages of 315.  One around 2007 and the other the current one.  You need to say in which you are interested.

Dunno yet, taking delivery of a 315 the week after next (excited!).  Sailed one last year out of Rye, NY and she did well in light air, the typical summer conditions of Long Island Sound, my home waters.  My use case will be similar to yours: single handing, a friend or two for a few days’ cruising.  They don’t have a lot of storage space and the holding tank is only about 10 gallons, but for my purposes I think it’ll be fine.  Not planning on doing anything super ambitious with her — no ocean crossings.  Short hops in locations where there are plenty of resources ashore is what I have in mind.

I got a new 315 in April 2023. I wanted a boat that I could sail single handed or with 2 other friends at a time. I couldn't be more pleased with the design:
1) Hanse have built in a huge amount of space into the boat. The transverse stern acbin and big bed are excellent
2) The boat is fast and incredibly responsive
3) I love the self tacking jib
I got the grey hull and synthetic teak decks which look great. I got an Elvstrom Furlstrom (roller furling) code zero and love it - whilst I don't think the self tacking jib compromised performance when close hauled, it is less good on a reach and the code zero makes up for this.
I crossed the English Channel in her this season and we reached the whole way with the code zero up and doing about 7 knots average.
The finish quality is very good and the boat feels solid.
The inernals look very good. My only criticism is that the storage cupboards are spartan to put it mildly. As I have got to know the boat, I have built shelves and other stroage solutions that suit how I live on board (shelves, crockery holders, glasses storage etc)
With these in place, I do not find storage an issue - the stern locker on deck is huge (able to take all the normal stuff plus 4 person liefraft plus 7 big fenders and lines), the saloon under-seat locker takes the code zero, tools and boots, the wall units take spares and food, and the sink unit cupboard takes all the crockery and odds and ends. There are spacious cupboards in stern and forward cabins.
The toilet space is large and, once I had put 5 or 6 hooks in them, large enough to use with 3 sets of waterproofs drying in there.
Hope this is helpful...

Thanks, Brian. What was your previous boat?

It was a wooden gaff rigged cutter - Cape Henry 21

Hi Brian. We are relatively new owners of a 2020 315. I have made some adaptations to our cockpit locker so that I can easily hang lines in there. However I’m about to tackle galley and cabin stowage. I’d be most interested to see what you’ve done there if you have any images. Many thanks. John

Hi John

I'll post some images - its all drawer dividers and simple stuff (eg double decker cutlery divider), but I would say it has doubled what we can store and get to easily.

Thanks Brian images will be great. Don’t worry, I like simple and straightforward but nothing beats learning from those who’ve gone before you.
I made this rope hanger for the cockpit locker by making up two little tabs attached to the projecting ends of the bolts which attach the cockpit locker hinges. A couple of nuts to secure the tabs and I could hang a timber rod to hang ropes where I can easily reach them.

Terrific Brian good ideas there. Did you make any custom stuff for the stowage under the sink?

Thanks - yes pretty much everything was custom made excpet the stuff for the aft cabin. I like the locker rope solution.

Any pics of the under-sink stowage? I’m assuming crockery and cooking pots and pans are down there.

Actually, I keep the pots and pans in the space under the cooker.

Nothing new or clever in the cupboard under the sink I am afraid - the second shelf came with screw-in columns to seperate crockery when I got the boat. These work just fine, so that is where I keep plates. I use the bottom shelf for beer (!) and the top shelf for cleaning stuff.

I also decided to use the chrome rails on the cockpit table mounting to fit a removable mug holder and a small stroage box for sunscreen, sunglasses, phones, knife etc

All very useful stuff thank you Brian. You might also have solved a mystery for me. I was not the first owner. When I got the boat there were some packets of bibs and bobs including some mysterious short timber sections with screw on ends. I’ll have to find them again but they might be the screw-in columns!

We own a new Hanse 315 since 2,5 years. Despite some flaws that had to be fixed by Hanse after delivery (minor stuff) we only encountered know problems. I do not know a lot of Dehlers or Hanses with a reliable sensor for the fresh water tank. So this needs some attention. Some more, minor issues. Mostly as a couple, we are sailing the IJsselmeer and North Sea and could not be happier. I did quite some racing in former times and while the 315 is far away from being a racer, she is responsive and by no means slow. I strongly recommend the Code-0 on an endless furler (our sails are made by Quantum, Elvstroem had some quality issues in the recent years which I had to experience on our former boat with newly ordered sails...). One thing that is not well know outside Germany (where we live) is, that next to the Hanse Yards at Greifswald there is a carpenter who is specialized on Hanse interiors. We asked our dealer to add cupboards in the salon and under the oven. We are now very happy with the looks and the storage.

This is what the carpenter in Greifswald did...

Basically, two cupboards were added on both sides where usually a "void" is found by design. Looks great, works well.

Hi! Do you have a name of the company who made this work?

Hi Ockero,

unfortunately not. It was arranged by our Hanse-Dealer, West-Yachting (Germany). Maybe you can either ask Hanse directly or your dealer or contact West-Yachting Germany (there is also an office in The Netherlands). It seems to be a beaten path for Hanse to refer to this carpenter.

Best, Norbert

Thanks for the reply. I bought a Hanse 315 yesterday, so I have a few things to sort out before I start thinking about the interior. But thanks anyway, I’ll check with West-Yachting.

Congratulations. Our Hanse 315 really makes us (mainly sailing as a couple on the IJsselmeer, the North Sea and the Baltic Sea) really happy. Easy to handle, still seaworthy (enough) and easy to maintain. We added a few extras and optimizations and - like any other boat - she comes with some compromises, but after 3rd season we are still thrilled. One caveat: Our freshwater sensor never worked properly and is about to be exchanged for the 4th time. This is a know hickup of many Hanses. It would be interesting to know, whether your sensor works and what kind of sensor is used on your boat. When is the planned delivery date?

Best, Norbert

Hi!
I haven’t had time to check the water gauge yet, but I found this one – discounted price. You should be able to see the level on the plotter, but it might be possible to get the reading on the indoor display as well.

Don't know the height yet, but I’m going to measure and buy one.

Hi
I am also considering a new 315 so it is great to hear so many enthusiastic comments from other owners. We sail a 2006 315 at the moment and are looking at either the new 315/348. Unfortunately the dealer doesn't have a 315 models for us to look over at the moment. We are based on the River Hamble UK so if anyone in the area would be willing to show us their boat we'd be extremely grateful.
Thanks
Colin
