Hi, I have a 4 year old H348. I really like the fact that all the lines are led back to the cockpit, but, of course, the downside is a LOT of friction, which seems to be getting worse. I particularly notice this when (e.g.) I have set 1st and 2nd reefs and then the wind drops and I want to put the main back up. The friction of dragging out the reefs is tremendous, and it even seems to come close to stalling my electric winches! Any ideas for reducing friction in the reefing lines in particular and the running rigging in general? I don't want to change the rig, I just would like the friction to be back where it was when the boat was new. I was thinking perhaps of trying to lubricate all the blocks, but what with? Everything's still pretty much original at the moment, but I'd consider (e.g.) changing the blocks from the standard Seldens if that might improve things..

What diameter are your reefing lines? I’ve changed to 8 mm dyneema, and have no issues with friction.

You can use a product called One Drop to lubricate the blocks. Also make sure the deck organisers sheaths are free. But changing the diameter of the lines will definitely make a difference.

Hi Pekka, Thanks for that suggestion, I've already reduced the diameter of my jib-sheet, which I think has helped. I'll do the reefing lines next.

Yes reefing lines are often too big on Hanse original fit dependant on rigger. If you go down to 6mm or 8mm it makes a world of difference. I use 8mm for R1 and R2, and 6mm on Reef 3. Note:I use Liros Polyester double braid [Dyneema would be nice?].

Another thing to check, if you go Dyneema you should consider Dyneema Main Halyard also reducing diameter. On my 315 [2007] the main halyard was 12mm and the guide where it enters the mast was incorrectly sized [too small] and as the rope bent through mast entry the rope was unable to run, this caused both hoist and drop problems. 8mm dyneema should be more than adequate on your main halyard. when reefing the stretch on a polyester main halyard [even at 12mm] does need regular re-tensioning to maintain the flat sail shape you need in windier conditions.

Thanks again for all the helpful replies. I got some "One Drop" and applied it everywhere I could - has made a noticeable improvement! I've also had the reefing lines replaced with 8mm Dyneema. Haven't had chance to try them yet.

If you look at this thread, you will see how I fitted pulleys on the leech cringles to reduce friction, both in tightening the foot and when pulling out the reefs.
