One of my projects for this winter is to fit a battery charger to my 312. If anyone out there has the factory fitted charger could you kindly give me the following advice:

What rating is your charger (ie 20A, 30A ...)?

What make is your charger? (I was thinking of getting a Sterling model)

Where do Hanse fix the charger to give it adequate ventilation?

Are you happy with the installation?

If anyone could help me with these queries I would be most grateful.

Hello,

the standard Hanse Charger is a Sterlin 30A (not the digital one). It's mounted in the box just in front of the battery (with the round top).

I build in a Amp.meter and I have two 60/80 Ah Batteries parallel mounted (no engine circuit). I sometimes got 25 to 28 Amp charching current but just for a few minutes. I would buy the sterling 20A version although I have already the 30A one! Maybe it ist nicer to have 30A (3x10A) with an engine circuit. Than you have 20A for the service and 10A for the engine side!

In my opinion Sterling has the best price value ratio! E.G. Mobitronic doesn't give a correct IUOU line.

I have recently fitted the Sterling ProDigital 4 step 30A charger which has 3 outputs !! and find it excellent as I can charge the two batteries separately. It very quickly goes into float mode and runs the whole boat including the fridge with no problems.

I have fitted mine to the GRP panel below the chart table just under the electrical and conduit cupboard in the open to give it the best possible ventilation and so far none of the cooling fans have come on.

the standard Version also has 3 independend outlets. Ofcourse the digital one is better although for a 311 I would choose the 20Amp version. The fridge takes max 4Amp so you will always have at least 10 Amp left for charging. If you are max. 70% down from 160 Ah you would need 11 hours for charging. And that is nearly dead low!

It's always nice to have more but with standard acid or gel batteries the standard one is really fine. I wouldn't even charge an engine circle because the alternator always does it first, so this battery is always full!

I think I'll go for the 30A option so I can keep the engine battery charged when I don't use the engine for a while.
