In http://www.myhanse.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=1863&FID=1&PR=3 - this thread the other Ed sums up the feeling that I, and I'm sure many others, had when http://www.myhanse.com/ - http://www.myhanse.com was off the air from Sunday through until late on Tuesday this past week.

It made me realise how much I enjoy the site and how valuable it is, how much I rely on it and how much I would miss it.  Sad or what?!

The thought did cross my mind that it might be gone permanently.  Had that been the case then we would have collectively lost two things - a significant knowledgebase and a great network of like minded people.

I concluded that if the great ship "myHanse.com" were to sink then we really need some lifeboats...

The myHanse.com site is provided as a goodwill gesture by Hanse UK.  It was interesting to note that whilst myHanse.com was down, the Hanse UK site http://www.hanseyachts.co.uk - http://www.hanseyachts.co.uk was also down implying they are on the same server.

I am not suggesting in any way that Hanse UK have any intentions to cease support but one really never knows what might happen. Being in the middle of the Atlantic with a big hole in the bottom of the boat is no time to be thinking I wish I'd bought a liferaft.  Buy it now in the hope you never need to use it.  It is in this spirit I am making this proposal.

It seems to me that myHanse.com is made up of two primary things - a knowledgebase which is the forum and a network of people who create it.  Hanse UK effectively own the knowledgebase as it is on their servers - it is therefore difficult to preserve directly.  The source of the knowledgebase is the people who are members of the forum and in the event of disaster, if we can keep the network together we could rebuild the knowledgebase.

I therefore propose that we build up the contact details of the membership who want to participate so that we could rebuild the network if myHanse.com were to ever sink.  I suggest we do this by building a set of "registries" for each model of boat independently of myHanse.com.

I have started this for the 342 at http://www.hanse342.com - http://www.hanse342.com and posted http://www.myhanse.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=1876 - a thread about it in the Hanse 341/342 forum.  With the exception of the 411, the equivalent domains are available for all the other models - it just needs people to register the domain and do the small amount of work necessary to maintain the model's registration page.  I registered the Hanse342.com domain at https://joker.com - https://joker.com for USD60 for five years.

Hopefully this will give us a sufficient liferaft in the event that myHanse.com ever goes off-line.

Hi Ed,

I had the same feeling when the site went of the air but on the other hand the idea of hoping other people will register the different myhanse###.coms is probably a bit to much to expect.

While "Myhanse.com"own the knowledgebase and have control over it I would think it's a good idea to start a forum of our own independent of Myhanse.com to keep control over it ourselfs. As you can imagine this would have a lot of advantages while there would not be more work for
the daily running of it.

Available domainnames http://www.myhanseonline.com - www.myhanseonline.com
                                       http://www.yourmyhanse.com - www.yourmyhanse.com
Link a forum to any of these names and bob's you uncle.

I think your idea is very good but as you wrote yourself  the 411 is not available and of course their might be more nr's gone before someone registers the names.

With a forum of your own you could do all this without the danger of loosing information.

Ps. I don't know of course how dependent we are of myhanse.com

Regards,Willem

Guys,

Think you are all a bit over playing it a bit!

The server we run Hanse and myHanse on (and infact http://www.yiuk.com - www.yiuk.com the company I own) went down thats all. In fact it was just a problem with out ISP and a security issue.

myHanse is backed up every night and there are no plans to close it.

We have been looking (or I have) at ideas to make it better. I like the idea of a boat register and the posibility of own blogs on the site and am open to ideas for this. If any one has any ideas do let me know.

Remember when registering domain names that Hanse Yachts is a trade mark and that any use of the logo etc would be subject to that.

Jonathan,

My suggestion was only to set up a liferaft.  As everybody knows you only ever get into a liferaft if you have to step up into it.  The whole thing is my IT paranoia showing through - I have some responsibilities for Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity in my non Hanse life...

I would fully support the concept of a Boat Register managed by you guys, especially if the data was downloadable as this would negate the need for my proposal.

On the topic of Blogs, with so many Yacht Blog sites out there, my inclination would not be to re-invent the wheel but provide a capability to link a Registry entry to these.
