Thanks for posting that. I was trying to foster a bit of friendly banter amongst the Hanse contingent. No takers it seems.

Anyway to stir things up - We were the fastest Hanse on corrected time last year. Any challengers?

Andrew,

We are going to be out there endeavouring to stop you repeating your success from last year.  Seems to me you've got a very good handicap (0.948) given that you have a 130% genoa.

Last year we had the third fastest time on handicap of the Hanse's in ISC that are also racing this year.  Second was Jodeanni - a 315.  Since last year we have acquired a symmetric spinnaker (yellow and green with a Hanse wave logo on it - look out for us) and a new laminate self tacking jib but have had to pay a little in our handicap (0.970 now versus 0.960 last year).

The only other forum members who I know plan to be there are John & Sue on Swagman.   As the RTI race always favours smaller boats, they're at even more of a disadvantage to you in their 461 than we are in our 342.  On top of that Swagman is probably still loaded down with Carribean rum unless their delivery crew drank it all!?

We're hoping for a breeze from the NW in the early part of the race that veers to N in the second part so that you are stuck on your slow starboard tack all the way round!

I'm planning to get Scorpio over to Cowes mid morning on Friday and hope to be in either the Yacht Haven or Shephards Wharf for Friday night.  If you're around come over and help lighten Scorpio by drinking a beer!

Thats the spirit!

Noo noo noo, never will you need that spinny - leave it behind - it'll just load you down!! but if you do fly it I'd lurv to see it - sounds a bit different to the usual colour schemes.

Laminated self tacker ehh? - now thats just showing off!. You know they delaminate if used ? - A word to the wise - leave it behind as well !!

Thanks for the invite & would be good to have a snifter with you. Unfortunatly we'll be at Port Hamble on Fri but the plan is Cowes Yacht Haven on Sat from about 3.30pm!!. If you're around on Sat in Cowes then we'll definately hook up.

Fair wind

Andrew,

Sorry you can't make it on Friday.  We're also planning to go into the Yacht Haven or Shephard's Wharf on the Saturday.

We'll try and keep a space alongside us for you when you arrive.  We'll take your lines with one hand and give a beer with the other!

The spinnaker is a lightly used one which I acquired from Hanse UK.  It's in their older corporate colours of green and yellow with a Hanse logo.  Although they wouldn't be my first choice of colours, I don't feel so bad about it that I'll leave it behind.

We also have a big asymmetric - all purple with a pink number.  Might be seen in the distance ahead of you between Bembridge Ledge and the forts?

Hope to see you Saturday/

Good luck!

Scorpio - he he!! I guess it'll be us handing you the mooring lines - Guiness?. Oh and it looks like a NW force 4 so Spinny start. We'll be looking back for you when we get to Yarmouth!

Anyway joking aside if we dont contact you on the water (channel 16), well try to do so at Cowes - same channel.

bon chance!

Andrew,

Looks a bit more west than NW to me.  Seems like you might be stuck on a long fetch on that slow old starboard tack of yours!  We'd hang around and wait for you but as we start ten minutes ahead of you it would mean deliberately getting caught up in all the dirty air from the purple fleet...

We'll be on dual watch and listen out for you.

Fair winds!

Hi All,

A nice day out.  Bit wet and wild but overall really good for Hanse participants.  Of 24 entries, 21 competed and declared OK.

When checking out the results below do remember there were reputed to be 2,000 boats racing, so it's fabulous all our Hanses got round in the top 30%.  Having four picking up pennants at the prize giving this afternoon should make us all feel proud!

Position O/A : Name : Class : Class Position

14   White Mischief IRC3C - 3rd in class
23   Wight Leopard ISC5A - 1st in class
45   Scotch Mist ISC1C - 1st in class
64   Nellie ISC5C - 2nd in class
116 Swagman ISC4A - 10th in class
135 Jodeanni ISC7B - 8th in class
175 Pean II ISC7C - 18th in class
191 Scorpio ISC6C - 11th in class
200 Elysium ISC4A - 18th in class
220 Cloudy Bay ISC6C - 17th in class
230 Harry ISC4A - 20th in class
296 Highflight ISC5C - 20th in class
302 Gretel ISC7B - 20th in class
308 Dragonfly ISC6C - 24th in class
313 High Flight ISC5C - 20th in class
345 Mojo ISC7A - 17th in class
437 Rasberry Ripple ISC6A - 77th in class
456 Javelot IRC1C - 24th in class
492 Boatshare Two ISC6C - 39th in class
520 Serefe ISC2B - 39th in class
524 Csardas IRC2B - 40th in class

Congratulations obviously due to Andy Hind on White Mischief for rocketing around so well and getting 14th overall on corrected time out of this the biggest RiR Fleet ever.

Plus there should be a few headaches this morning in the crews off Wight Leopard and Scotch Mist who both secured first places in their respective classes.  Top marks to Nellie with her brilliant 2nd in class, and also White Mischief for her 3rd. Really well done all you guys.

I'd respectfully suggest with such results - those with flags to collect should discuss entering a Hanse Team next year.

(Results as off website http://www.roundtheisland.org.uk - http://www.roundtheisland.org.uk  Sunday am)

Thanks John for the INFO,I followed you for a while.!
I still don't quite get where I came ,but it was a lot of
"FUN" my first time and on a new boat.!!  My thanks to Andy Knock of Hanse who skippered for me.Great job..

we had a great tussle with HARRY for a long time, I am not an experienced
Sailor ,  However i  thought that when one is on  Starboard tack ,SCREAMING
starboard and WATER that we should not have had to take drastic action
to avoid a lot of damage to both boats ,missing by about a foot.!!Clap

Never the less it was good to see Hanse's do well ,and really congrats to you winners..

Hi Terry,

Congrats on your new boat.
Did see a 40+ Hanse right on our stern up that first beat - do you have a big Hanse logo on the hull for if so - it must  have been you.
You came 200 overall which out of 2,000 boats puts you in the top 10%.  As shown above, you also came 18th in your class - so well done.

Re all the ports & starboard calls in this size of fleet, we only had a couple of issues with others.  Excuse me maybe teaching my granny etc, but  you'll often find if you are on starboard but wish to continue going the way you are heading, it often pays to slow slightly and wave the port boat  through.

They invariably think well of you for not calling them around, and you can obviously keep going the right way without them causing you any further concern.  Of course all a bit different were you match racing another yacht........

Anyway, enjoy the new yacht and hope to catch you at the Hanse Solent Rally.

Cheers
JOHN

Some great results there.

We (Csardas) were short-handed.  Just three of us, one of whom had only been sailing once before.  The other is also very new to sailing.  So it was hard work for us and we were never going to be very competitive.  Also, just past the needles we had an altercation with another yacht who were overtaking us to windward and came too close.  A big gust and a big swell caused us to round up and there was only one place for us to go - smack into the other yacht.  The bow roller and stainless plate on the front of Csardas is bent and buckled, ripped out the bolts and sheered the base of the pulpit stanchion.  Quite a mess.

Anyway, could have been worse!  We made it all the way round with no further scrapes but we could have done with a lot more crew!

Andrew,

What an awesome day's sailing!  Best RTI for a long time...

Many congratulations on your Class win.  Clearly well deserved!  You must be delighted.

After we saw you get through us somewhere just before Newtown, we didn't see you again until about a mile before St Catherine's when we saw you about 200m behind us.  I don't know where we passed you - we went further inshore than the bulk of the fleet but not so far as to be rock hopping.  After that we didn't see you again until you yelled at us as we motored past the Yacht Haven.  You finished a little over 10 minutes before us.

As noted by John, we were 11th in our class

As you will see http://www.myhanse.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=1585&PID=16476#16476 - here , we had a bit of a problem with an exploding block near the forts.

We also had a wooden Classic Yacht hit us with a glancing blow on our port pushpit when we were on starboard and he was trying to duck behind us.  It knocked the GPS aerial of it's threaded mount, scuffed it and he left some wooden splinters behind - I guess from their toerail.  Hanse's are certainly strongly built as there was no damage to Scorpio other than where the flange of the puspit mount inboard has cracked the gel coat slightly - I think the whole pushpit must have flexed inboard but it doesn't seem to be bent.  The GPS also seems to be fine.  I think we were considerably luckier than some.

I came to look for you in the Yacht Haven around 7pm on Saturday but, not surprisingly,  there was nobody on board.

Will you be at Hanse owner's event in a couple of weeks?  If so, see you then otherwise at next year's RTI.

Ed  sorry to hear about your contretemps with other boats. - they're a flipping nuisence!! Sympathies - (if it wasnt for the others we could have won the gold Roman Bowl!!) Are you sure you were ahead of us at some point round the back of the island? We saw 2 large purple (with pink shapes) spinny/ asymetrics behind us - was one Scorpios? - never were they anywhere near overtaking!!. Sorry we had dinner booked for 7.0 pm (hence the dash to finish quickly) but thanks for looking for us. Where did you berth? Also sorry - I really wanted to attend the Hanse event but it clashes with something else - Hmmm! have a nice time and thanks for your congrats.

Well done to all of you in the Round the Island Race and bad luck to those of you who where knocked, damaged etc.
We were out on Saturday - not racing (had company on board, don't think they would have liked to race!!)
We were in a situation where we were keeping well out of the way of boats returning ftom the race - well over to the IOW, low water not a lot beneath us. Small boat comes screaming towards us not looking - we had to shout at him told him we had no more depth but he forced us closer in and we touched the bottom!! we were fine but he shouted a few obsenaties at us.....
Still we managed to get our visitors up to the Folly and had a jolly good meal as always.
We were to have joined you at the Hanse Rally however due to knee surgery on Friday will not be able to come (gutted) wanted to meet other Hanse owners.
All have a good time and hopefully see you all in the future.

Andrew,

Yep - GBR 9168T was definitely behind us in the lead into St Catherine's.  We bottled out of flying coloured sails.  Did you fly yours?

We ended up managing to get the last berth on the inside of the north basin at Shephard's Wharf.

I definitely think it may be time for Hanse UK to put up a prize for the first Hanse on corrected time in ISC class.  Also maybe next year we should think about putting an ISC team entry up from myHanse.com contributors - I'm up for it if you are and we can find another willing participant.  Although maybe my performance doesn't qualify me Cry.

Sorry we won't catch up at the Hanse rally.  May see you around the Solent.

Well if you're sure we were behind you at St Cats I cant argue! Possibly you passed us at the Needles - we did a crash tack to avoid the Varsey and a lot of boats went through closer in.  We didnt put the kite up either. (the guy who won the Sheperds Trophy this year, that we won last year, not only flew his kite - averaging no less than 12knots but when that blew out he put up another. I guess he bought that trophy!!)

Dont bknow what sort of rigmarole is involved with getting a new trophy going, but I think its time to do it.

We'll keep a look out for you - hopefully one of these days we'll actually meet properly (as opposed to shouting and waving)

I'd back that call for a Hanse ISC team entry but suggest logical entrants in an A Team should be our three highest placers for this year White Mischief, Wight Leopard and Scotch Mist.

But as we'll be replacing our 20,000 mile sails for next season, I'd equally love the chance to join another two Hanses in shall we say, a B Team.........

Hi John,
I'd be up for that - B, or possibly, C team. We raced our new 430 in the RTI for the first time this year and had a great tussle all round with Elysium. Really enjoyed your talk at the Hanse rally last night and may have a few questions for you at a later date. We are planning an Atlantic circuit during my sons gap year.
All the best

John,

Sadly we wouldn't be able to have a mixed team of IRC and ISC handicap boats so would not be able to leverage Andy's performance on White Mischief.

We should pursue Hanse to sponsor a cup for the first Hanse in ISC.  I think we can choose to enter a team independently of Hanse.  I suggest we go with the best three performing boats from last year who are active on myHanse.com next spring and call it the myHanse.com team - we could have A, B and C teams depending on numbers.

Good to see you on Saturday.

Hello again to John and Ed plus any others reading this thread who we joined for the Hanse Rally. What an excellent event!! To reiterate Its about time we had a Hanse ISC trophy (especially if a certain WM is excluded- the rest of us would get a chance!) Not sure, on Saturdays showing, we'd get picked for the Hanse team next year though  - never gonna be allowed to forget there is a buoy called William!

I notice that a boat that I believe to be Hanse "Mojo" is featured in a very nice photo taken from my boat on the RTI 2008, I am happy to pass a copy to the owner if anyone knows how to get in touch with them. the Boat carries sail No GBR 1210L
