Hi Panos,

I know nix re Spanish issues but we were in Lagos Portugal last September at the same time as two new 630's.  One Brit registered but both owned by Venezualens.  Both destined to cross the Atlantic to go home later in year.  Very impressive yachts.

One of them (not sure which) had to be slipped in the Sopromar Yard adjacent to Lagos Marina for keel work.  It was out for more than a few days but I've no idea of the issues.

Hugo (one brother owning Sopromar Yard) or Perdro (Hanse Protugal based in Portimao) may be able to clarify what was fixed - maybe contact them?

But I can't believe it was serious.  The Brit registered one had a engine issue which delayed their start in the 2007 ARC - but when it left it positively flew across.  Think owner (Thomas) said 12 days which I don't think Thomas would have pressed to achieve if he had any keel worries.

Good luck
JOHN

Hi,

Thank U for the info.
I have been privately contacted by several 630 and other Hanse owners, and it seems to be just that. Rumors. I am more relaxed now.

Yes, I am currently on the boat with the serious keel problem that you mention, but that has been solved. It was not a problem of the yard, but the importer. Luckily, and my hats off to them, Hanse took the boat, solved the problem and returned it in optimum conditions, which continue until now.

Basically, and until this day we don't know the full story, but Marina Estrella, tried to deliver the boat with a serious keel problem that was caused when it was mounted. They insisted that they had nothing to do with the problem. Either way, it is now solved and the sailing is fantastic. No further complaints except the usual slow (or none) guarantee response from Marina Estrella.

Hi Athina,

I intend to undertake a solo circumnavigation around the globe, via the three capes. solo. non-stop and unsupported.

I am looking for a yacht of approx 60 ft in length.
Rigging for easy handling by one person. Other modifications that will need to be done to customise it for the journey include extra watertigh compartments fore and aft, crash boxes etc.

I have been seriously considering the Hanse 54 and the Hanse 63.

(The other options are
Marten 49 - very expensive , about 1.5 million, but an all carbon yacht

Jenneau SunOdessy DS - well built (from what Ive heard), better than the
Beneteau

Swan 60 - heavy yacht, very expensive

What are your thoughts on the suitability of the Hanse 54 or 63 for such a voyage thru the southern ocean.
In terms of
1. build quality
2. handling ease
3. reliability & safety

http://www.myhanse.com/member_profile.asp?PF=1710&FID=19 - oceanbluesail09 - best if you confine your general question to the thread you opened for it.  Don't worry, this is an active site and people will see it.  I'm very interested to see what some of our ocean-crossers say.  Many will be off sailing just now so you might need to wait a short while for the replies.

I have to admit that the boat does have constant problems. So not really the best for round the world unless you take a year off to solve all of them before setting off. Nothing really big, but the boat has not stopped having problems.

As for important features. On a 630, you definitely need a furling boom unless you are a minimum of three on the boat. If the weather is over 30 knots, you will need four people minimum. It's a very big sale that requires proper storing when brought down so it does not get damaged sooner than you wish.

Apart from that, have a good water maker and good electronics and the rest is OK. The general design of the boat is great, even interior layout is great for long stays on the boat. If only it would not have all those problems that constantly appear, then it would be one of the best boats around.

Happy sailing around the globe :-)

The after sales service problems you ment with Marina Estrella, It seems happend quite offen, may be Hanse should investigate a bit more and may be change the importer. Many of us are suffering this lack of serviceAngryAngryAngry.

Simply, I do not understand.

Hi John,
this is a really late response, but I just got registered at "myHanse". We were the two Hanse 630 in Lagos in october 07 and my boat TAIMA was at Sopromar for several guarantee works paid for by the yard. The thing with the Keel was just some delamination of the epoxy layers on top of the iron cast fin and some parts of the led bulb. Sopromar did a fine job by sandblasting and building the coats up from scratch. They also fixed the Hull to Keel connection cracks by using a final coat of Sikaflex instead of the rigid epoxy. Ever since there has been no problem with the Keel and there was never any structural issues.  Both Boats TAIMA and GANDUL are sailing around venezuelian waters and in my case with some 11.000 nm since we left Greifswald.
