Beautyful ship Panos.  The pictures show exactly the philosofy of Hanse.
Sailing  a 63 feet yacht with only 4 people, in competition with a racing yacht with 8 people on board.
(But I assume there was no downward or reaching leg with a spinaker)

I agree. In the pictures the boat looks very much like it's behaving like a dinghy despite its actual size.

I have always felt that about my own boat as well.

hi,
DK46 is 46 feet and had 12 on board. Upwind we were faster but due to the selftacking jib we sailed 1-2 degrees lower. We were 7 on board- two driving one hour each, two main trimmers and one trimming the jib and two girls pressing the main winch buttons. We beat them in tactics.
The first leg was downwind 18 to 24 knots wind (true)! We were 7 on board, but only 5 racing. We hoisted the code 1 and gibed in complete darkness several times. With four electric winches (provided all goes perfectly smooth) gybbing is a joke! but there is NO room for any mistake. The 630 is not for beginners.During the jib the boat MUST keep her speed to lower the apparent wind speed and its forces on the main, so the jybe must be done fast! With electric winches left and right both trimmers take the main sheet in using both winches-double speed-and both are releasing it after the gybe-to be sure.Driving at 150 to 170 degrees (true) wind angle we did 12 to 13 knots boat speed.
During the gybe the loosened main sheet zoomes across the deck and if not handled properly distroyes whatever is in its way!!!

Hi,

This Friday we arranged for MMBW Nicole to be weighted and measured for IRC certification.
Hopefully we get a good value ( between 1.28 and 1.29 is great).

Hi,
I started as a normal morning with almost no wind to finish the race.
The wind changed from a 10 knot southerly to a 25 to 30 knot westerly that an hour later increased to gale force levels. The video was taken later, after the wind dropped again to 35..40 knots, but the waves remained for the rest of the race. We couldn't finish the race and found shelter in the commercial harbour of Lavrion, which is relatively protected from westerly winds and waves. To enter in our marina with gale force westerly wind is suicidal.

Excellent! Lots of adrenalin at those speeds and the sound of the sea rushing by the transom is like a roar!

Panos, I noticed a block on the side of the boom near the mast. Do you have a german sheeting type arrangement for the main with a track on the cockpit floor just ahead of the pedestals? Did the factory do that for you or was it an aftermarket mod?

Hi Steve,

We have a German sheeting system and each end of the main sheet ends to a brake ,each side of the boat. We can engage it to the main or secondary winches. Usually we operate the main on one side of the boat, except when gybing when we use both winches at the same time for speed reasons.
We do not have a track. We only have a central fixed block. We use the boomvang to control the roach and the sheet to control the boom position. This is normal in big boats. A traveler would be only useful if we had an extra pair of winches and a traveler operator==> would turn our boat to a racing machine.

Hi, It is Harken, but I am not very happy with it. In windy conditions it is a 3 person job to furl the gennaker.

Hi,

I am considering about ordering a furler for asymetric spinakker(genakker).
Panos, you are not very happy with the Harken system,I also get some bad comments on the Karver KF 5 and Selden CX 40 system.
Have anyone experience with the FACNOR Furler Asym FX ? IMO it is the only one who first furling the center of the luff before start furling the whole genakker.Like I understand from the documentation I can bay the FX4500  for a Code 0 or staysail, and use the optional extra fitting with the central furling rope for use it for the asym. genakker, its that correct?
We are most of the time sailing with a small crew or solo ,so the most important issue is the easy handling, not to host the sail but get it down when the wind increases.

Hi  Panos    Thanks for the info .Also Wet &Wild has the same issues  as I do ..   My wife and I sail our 531 [now 7 years old] only 2up  racing and cruising ..Ihave been trying to sort out the best extra running/reaching headsail most easily handled in light to moderate wind strengths. I prefer a furler  but the available space ahead of the jib furler is too small.  A bowsprit may be the best option but I would like someone to have done it first...We would never give up the self tacker jib and after 7 years we still love the boat   Cheers  John

Hi,

Our asymmetric spinnaker which we hoist from a sock proved to be much easier to handle shorthanded. With 3 persons we can even make jibes with the simrad pilot to steer and turn the boat, one person (me) taking care of the main sheet, one releasing and taking in the asym sheet while the third one runs the clew around the forestay. The more windy it is the easier it goes, up to 20 knots real. Handling the almost 300 sqm spi shorthanded makes our crew VERY PROUD.

What we must always observe is to douse the spi  from the same side we hoisted it, else the sock gets tangled around the forestayDead.
To be able to use the sock we made a lot of improvements to the original setup.
