I sail with folks whose legs are apparantly not long enough to comfortable jump or step off my 350 as I near the dock. I've though about a two or three polyurethane step on the dock or maybe even making a three step platform, but the crew does not feel comfortable with that idea and would like a plastic type step that West Marine sells that attaches to the rail or maybe around the bottom of the shrouds. have any owners had similar complaints from crew, and what have you done? rc

Well, this is a common problem with the recent high hulls. Think about panos with his 630. Have you ever been beside a 630. It is huge. His wife could use a paraglider for landing on the dock. The alternative is flooding your hull before entering the harbour. It will help to lower your position.Wink
But it will be expensive after some time......and i think the bilgepumps from Hanse will not be very helpful getting it all out again......

BTW you could bye this:

http://www.hanse-yachts.de/accessiores.html - http://www.hanse-yachts.de/accessiores.html

i do not know if it fits on your 350.

Also you can bye a stepfender. Some people like it.

The best solution is doing some sport in advance. My wife has loooong legs and is very sportive as she is preparing  to run a marathon soon(in total contrast to me ;-). So we do not have any problem with that.

We use a fender step on our 540 and it works well for us.  Get a blue (or other dark colour) one so it does not show the dirt

We've been very happy with the fenderstep also (see photo on our 400 here http://www.sailkerkyra.com/index.php?pr=add_ons - http://www.sailkerkyra.com/index.php?pr=add_ons )

We had tried a couple of kinds of ladders placed on the dock.   With the variety of different dock designs and heights it is not a very reliable solution.  Sometimes you have a more risky challenge with the ladder than without.  Some notes about the fenderstep:
  • It is very nice to be able to have your step in place before you even dock.  People can use the step to hop off and tend to the lines.  Likewise it makes for an easy departure as you can climb aboard while the boat is pulling away.
  • Once we had figured out the best height, I put carabiner-type clips on the fender lines so you can have it securely in place in seconds.  We clip it to the same stanchion loops that the side gate connects to.
  • As Richard pointed out, blue is a better color for hiding the dirt from the foot traffic.  On the other hand you can write your boat name on the white fender with a black marker as in our photo.
  • Over time it will cause some dulling of the gelcoat from rubbing but this can be buffed out.
  • Mother-in-law tested:  she prefers it to the ladder and is comfortable using it with her bad hip (no mother-in-law jokes please, I'm sure you're tempted, but she's a nice lady and I don't mind having her on board :-)

I have one of those fender-steps as well but the ship's dog prefers to do it his way. Even if the boat is covered in snow.

Clap I nominate Stampe as the myhanse mascot.   I think there is room on the home page for his photo, to the right of the 3 sailboat pictures.  Sometimes I wonder if Stampe is really the Vice-Admiral and Johan is just the ship's photographer.

@Johan,

Now I understand how U can write all these posts. I would also prefer to post than to remove the snow.

Is this November snow, or the pictures are from last January/February?

Now I see that this was my 300th post.Clap

Panos, you will be beating me in no time. I try to find any possible way to keep ahead of you in terms of number of posts but you will soon be overtaking me.

Anyhow, I try to keep my posts as authentic as possible. The pictures are from today. After having embarked the ship Í had a nice cup of something that we refer to as Shore Power Coffee in the cabin. That means that we make exactly the same coffee aboard as we make in the the castle where I happens to be the King. (Me thinks the castle is crap because you can't sail with it)

When we go sailing with the ship and we have to rely on battery power we make proper coffee as well, only we don't use 500 Watts of electrical power but use the stove instead to make hot water.

What I am saying is that I am enjoying my ship immensely even if the weather is as bad as the photos above describe.

I can also stretch as far as saying that I am enjoying being part of the myHanse community just as much, even though Panos will be elected Prime Post Writer before I become First Snowman.

Peter, excellent job. It is my habit to take a break during the work day to look at the forum and this morning my coworkers are wondering what the heck is so funny.

Following on Owen's post, I'd like to second the nomination of Stampe for the forum Mascot!  Although I'm tempted to nominate the handsome snowman....

This is extremely funny! I don't know what to say, but I think we have a new Admiral coming up - not because of the number of posts, not because of the number of posts per day, but because of the level of humour!

I am voting for Peter-Blake!

Hm..., I am not so sure Stampe would fancy a dress like that when he decides to take one of his dips. He's never fallen overboard from Emilia but he does it frequently from the inflatable dingy, as can be seen in the picture below.

I recently removed my "horror videos" from YouTube.

The picture shows how great the bath platform is. It was one of the main reasons for buying a 342. You get very close to the water, as you can see, and it is great for swimming, for entering the dinghy etc. It's just a shame that Hanse could never build it properly.

Not all the platforms are bad.  The one on my Dec 2006 342 seems to have survived two seasons OK.  Mind you I have avoided dancing, trampolining and having wild parties on it!

Johan, How is your new platform with the additional cockpit drains and the reinforcements now that you have had it a few months?  I do like the idea of the cockpit drains in it.

To tell you the truth - I never dared to dive directly from any of the platforms I tried, let alone tap dancing or throwing a good party. I have only used them to step carefully on and I had two that cracked. The other ones where twisted so they wouldn't close properly.

The second platform that cracked was delivered in April 2007 and it cracked after four days. I was told that Hanse changed their production after that so a further reinforced platform was introduced in May 2007.

The one that I have now (number six) is the least twisted of the lot but it is still twisted. This problem was fixed by building a higher support on the starboard side. It was easier to modify the boat than the bath platform!

The current platform works fine and I am happy with it although you don't want to look to close on how well it fits. The two holes will not drain the cockpit until you get substantial water in it. They are located a few centimetres above the sole and when the boat is heeled they will be even further from the water. Having said that, I think they are great if you are sailing in rough weather and get hit by a wave that fills the cockpit.

I don't know whether to be proud over the achievement to discourage buyers from going for the bath platform option.

I wonder what Hanse think? Will I get a Christmas card from them?

I ordered one for our 350 at first but after reading your story I was only just in time to cancel the order and got my mony back for it.

Never mind the Christmas card, you probably saved me a lot of hassle.
Thanks for that.

Keep up the good work.
