Nice Pictures,

Panos, what are you doing with your teak deck, it looks like new. Did you sand it?

Hi,
ThanksBig%20smile.

We do nothing special to the teak deck. We just wash it with fresh water and brush it with a soft brush regurarly.

Hmmmm,
my teak looks grey after 1,5 seasons.
for cleaning i use only fresh water and a soft brush.
Same way of cleaning as panos.

Confused

BTW. I do not have problems with this grey look.

Hi,

"regularly" possibly makes a difference. Regularly= 2/3 times a week. I have permanent crew on board.

Else it might be the sun.Teak decks tend to become grey after 4-5 years here.
I avoid sanding it since I guess Hanse only used a thin teak board (6-8mm). Each time you sand you eat 1/2 mm away. Probably I will sand it every 4-5 years.

Thanks panos,

2-3 times a week, my goodness

That makes a diffrence for sure!

I am happy if i am on my boat every 2-3 weeks for a weekend.

My permanent crew consists of a company of spiders. They do not tend to clean my deck at all.Wink

You asked me how I take the pictures of my boat. I use a small inflatable dinghy and you use a helicopter!

Great pictures, great boat! It all looks fabolous.

Just rumoursEvil%20Smile.
Two helis covered the start of the race.
I didn't pay any helicopter to take pictures.

Johan, I think the heli came with the 630 - one of the toys that goes in the garage Wink

Panos, those are excellent shots from the heli. You'll have to get one or two framed for the "sailing wall" at home.

Actually I did get all of them. The photographers CD contained more than 400 pics. For the prints (in A3) he charges 20 Euros and 800 Euros for 5 digital ones. As you imagine I didn't buy any digital photo. This is the reason that the pics I published have his logo on them.

Hi,

Yes, over 8 knots wind, MMBW Nicole is as fast as the thoroughbreds (JV 49, etc), in BIG waves even faster.

Yes they are awesome photos - what a nice looking boat and beautiful surroundings.

Panos:  I noticed that you didn't take your sail cover off for the race, and I'm wondering if you think it makes a difference.   On one hand it would seem that the cover and the lazyjacks would add some drag, but on the other hand I've sometimes wondered if closing off the foot of the sail helps the performance by reducing the spilling of air across the foot of the sail.

Hi,
By buying this boat I gave up the idea of competitive racing, so emptying the boat of almost all items, emptying the water tanks, counting the personal items each crewmember can carry etc is deep in the past. Although our 630 is extremely fast and many times we finish first, winning is practically impossible since we have to overcome a penalty (handicap) of about 26% time on time (we race under IRC rules).
Also lowering the 140kg main  without the sail cover and lazyjacks would require a basketball team on board since the boom lyes high over my head!
I assure you that we have a wonderfull time racing, passing almost all other boats, finding the best place in the destination harbour/marina and eating hot freshly cooked food and drinking wine while racing.

I'm of the same mind Panos.  I like to cruise competitively and race comfortably.

Still I was wondering how much difference something like a sailcover would make.  I understand that some power is lost due to air spilling across the foot of a sail which makes me wonder if there is also some advantage to keeping it up, maybe particularly in light wind?

As for removing the cover I can imagine it is much more critical on a boat the size of yours (this is one of the main reason I bought a smaller boat - lighter sails not such a long walk to get to the anchor locker Wink ).   One thing I've done is to modify my zipper so that it can fully separate at the aft end.  This makes it much easier to pull the cover forward off the boom (once the battens are removed from the cover) while keeping the clew of the sail tied on.   All you need to do then is untie the reefing lines from the boom and you can take the cover off and put it back on from the mast while the sail is still up and fully powered.

Owen.

Owen, I think you know that we pull the cover off for racing. This is no necessarily because of the drag but being able to see all of the foot actually makes it easier to trim.
